Install Nobara41, install Steam, problem solved.
I have Nobara installed on a USB-C Nvme 2 TB 980 Pro, my Windows PC runs normally when not inserted.
Bios set to prioritize ext sub first, auto switch to Nobara when I insert it.
Best gaming experience ever, it has solved driver issues automatically that windows refuses to fix.
I played yesterday on this i5 6core with 4g rx6400 on a 4K monitor, huge map. Gorgeous.
Just do it. Your Imac is perfect for it.

i use an iMac M3 with 8GB RAM. I can't say it runs smooth . . . .
First gen M series MBPro with M1 Max and 64GB RAM running very well. Actually only 2 crashes in a 100 hours or so. Using the Sukritact and TCS UI mods.
8GB RAM is unfortunately very low now-a-days; no one seems to write memory efficient code any more [Ah, for the days with my 128KB original Mac

I'm interested in getting the new Macbook Air M4 that releases next week. I know recommended RAM is 16GB. Does anyone know if higher RAM helps with the game, particularly with late game? It's a $200 increase to upgrade to 24GB, so I want to know if it's worth it to upgrade?

I think 16 GB is more than enough. I play with 8GB and that is too little, but 16GB is double that amount.
BTW, with too little I mean that on a larger map the game struggles. It works just fine, but not a smooth experience.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the MacBook Air. It has the 10 core CPU / 10 core GPU M4 and 16GB RAM.
I wanted to see its limits so I started off on High settings, and loaded a late game modern age standard size save. It wasn't perfect, but it also wasn't too bad either. The main issue was some noticeable "pop-in" whenever I zoomed in or out. So it was kinda rough, but still very much playable.
Then I set the settings to Medium and that seems like the sweet spot. Runs quite smoother and I honestly don't notice the quality between high and medium. Pop-in was gone. Still looks like a beautiful game. I'll probably keep it on this setting for here on out.
finally, I'm really impressed with the load times. My other PC I've been playing with has a Ryzen 9 CPU and a 6800HS GPU, from 2022. The Mac loads up saves about twice as fast than my PC, and even late game turns process very quickly. The PC can play on high settings better with no pop in, but with a game like Civ, i prefer the trade off of faster loads and turn times over graphics quality.
All and all, pretty impressive for a fan less machine not designed around gaming.

I use 8GB and did the same: change settings. I runs good. This is on a tiny map. Maybe a larger map will ruin things . . .
@Kmart_Elvis: If you play on the internal Retina display of the MacBook Air, you can try to adjust the resolution setting in-game from "Auto" to 1920 x 1200.
On "Auto" the game seems to run on the full retina resolution. I play on the MacBook Air M1 and have reduced the resolution to 1920 x 1200. This does not look any worse than full resolution on a 13" display, but the game runs noticeably smoother. Which is to be expected, since the game has to render a much lower number of pixels.
I also play on the medium settings btw, which is not perfectly smooth on the M1, but still acceptable to play the game imho.

I have a 2020 MacBook Air M1 with 16 GB of memory, is this similar to yours? I currently play on Xbox, but I love succession games, so would need to play on my Mac, but I wasn't sure if it could handle it. It meets the minimum requirements, but barely.[
@Methos: I am using the 2020 MacBook Air M1 with the 8-Core GPU Version (there is also a 7-core GPU version of the M1) and 8 GB of RAM.
As I mentioned above, I have selected the "Medium" Graphics preset and scaled down the resolution from "Auto" to 1920 x 1200. I find it very playable. Wonder movies and fast zooming show a noticeable stutter, but otherwise it is surprisingly smooth.
I would assume that the bottleneck on Mac is the GPU-Part. Newer models that have a 10-core GPU propably show a smoother experience, as well als the Pro-Models which have even more GPU-cores. In terms of the raw CPU-power as well as the amount of RAM the baseline M1 seems to be capable enough for Civ VII.
I have attachted the results of the in-game graphics-benchmark that I get from the settings explained above on the M1 MacBook Air. (I play the German version, sorry about that). The average frametime during this benchmark is 27.5 ms, which should be about 36 frames per second, if I am not mistaken. This may be not acceptable for a shooter game, but I think a turn-based strategy game like Civ VII can be played on a framerate like that.

Is multiplayer working for Mac users? We cannot see the game in the multiplayer lobby. (I just bought a second copy of Civ7 to do multiplayer with my son - since family sharing was not working - but this seems to have been a mistake because it did not solve the issue)

Have you tried using join codes? That is how we all run games, we don't make public games at all.
