Civ III - V

I knew that checking the Civ3 forums was the best place to find some opinions on Civ5. :)

I've really been itching for a good turn based strategy game, might have to see if I can install Civ3 on windows 7.

Huh. Makes me wonder if my computer will explode on me because I used AutoRun.

Odd. I installed it regularly and it works perfectly for me, with the exception of one or two mods.

Installing it on windows 7 turned out to be no problem at all, but I did have to switch from CivAssist to CPRsuite. Not sure how vxma managed, but I couldn't install Civassist with only .Net framework 4.0 installed.

Thanks for all of your honest reviews. I bought Civ4 the day it came out and absolutely hated it. Sold it a couple of days later. Someone earlier hit the nail on the head - the later games lack the scale of Civ3. I don't want to be punished or not allowed to play epic games, just make it a little more challenging maybe, but DON'T not allow me to play how I want to - or I won't buy the games!

I haven't tried CiV, just for the simple fact of STEAM. I will never play the game because of it. Oh well, I still love me Civ3!

Re: Windows7:
I had no problem at all installing Vanilla, PTW, and C3C on my Windows 7. The only problem I've noticed is that the words are blurry in the F1 screen.

I agree with The Eliminator regarding Civ IV punishing the "epic adventure" loving player. On an huge island, by yourself, with tons of resources, on medium-to-high difficulty? Too bad. Try spamming, and we'll make sure your tech rate is 0% for three millenia. Try limiting your expanse, and we'll make sure AI civs cram their crap cities into every doormouse hole you left open.

That "just-big-enough island alone" scenario is Civ III could be very, very fun sometimes.

I play Civ 3, 4, and 5 regularly, and they all appeal to me for different reasons.

Civ 3 was my first Civ game, and I love it mostly for nostalgic reasons. Civ 4 is the best balanced in the series, but I don't particularly care for the graphics in it- I'm just not a fan of that era of 3D graphics. Civ 5 is absolutely gorgeous, and introduces a lot of interesting new elements to the series, but it has had some balance issues, and the mod community probably won't be able to do cool stuff until the SDK comes out.

They're still all Civ though, and they are all definitely worth picking up.

Civ5...I haven't touched it in months. Worst waste of $50 I spent, but everyone has their own tastes. Now I will wait 1-2 months after every game is released to see what the reaction is from fans.
