Howdy,

I just purchased a copy of Civilization IV: The Complete Edition yesterday, but I have not been able to get it installed. I use a Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop with Windows XP. Whenever I place the disc into my drive, it sounds like it's booting up (It even shows the little disc next to my pointer), then it promptly stops. Attempting to open the drive in "My Computer" just causes Explorer.exe to stop responding and freeze until I eject it. Attempting to install through "Add Programs" gives me a message that the setup file is not on the disc. However, the installation began with no problems on the family's desktop computer.

Any help?

Thanks.

No, this never happens with other CDs. I tried to disable autoplay and open it in explorer. It froze for a few minutes, then showed me a completely blank folder, as if there was nothing on the disc

:hmm:
but it did work on another machine?
if that is the case I doubt that it is a disc problem - sounds more like a drive problem...
Do you have access to an external disc drive or some means of copying the contents of that disc from the computer it works on to the one you are trying to install?

Unfortunately, I have no access to an external hard drive. However, would it be possible/legal to copy the files from the disc onto the family computer, then send them to mine?

You aren't alone. Same thing is happening to me, bought the game tonight, but it will not install to my computer. When I insert the disc, nothing happens....It's like the computer doesn't even think there is a disc in the drive. When I double click on the disc drive it says "Please insert a disc". Weird. I hope I can get my money back.

Running Windows 7, standard old DVD-R/W drive. Every other disc I have is working fine, so I doubt it's a drive issue.

Welcome to CFC :band:

the thread you link to is about a completely different problem - the poster there has problems with the European Complete edition that is a different product from the US complete edition.
In the OP's case here it worked on one machine and not another so that certainly was not a disk problem.
In your case: did you check for updated disc drive firmware? Windows 7 is quite new. Of course there is always a chance that you got a bad disc...

Looks like I didn't look close enough on the above thread....my bad. Anyways, Ill have to check out the drive firmware, but it still seems a bit odd that every other disc I have works just fine. Could be a bad disc I suppose.

Just tried the game disc on a friend's laptop....installs just fine. Put the game disc back in my computer and its like it doesn't even exist...Computer tells me the drive is blank, "Please insert disc" etc. Seems like the same exact problem as the OP. My DVD drive is rather old...could that be the culprit? I don't want to feel like I just wasted 40 bucks for nothing.

it is possible - would you mind posting your dxdiag results file?
do you have any means of transferring the files from one computer to another - external harddisk or such? The US Complete edition comes without DRM - so you might be able to copy the disc contents onto a hard drive and install from there...

I have just bought the European version of Civ 4 Complete today and have the exact same problem.

DVD goes in the drive, it attempts to start up, a little DVD icon appears as if it were about to go into the Autoplay process, but then.............. nothing. It proceeds no further.

When I Look in Windows Exlporer the DVD shows as a blank.

I'm pretty confused.

I have tried it out on my laptop just there and it starts up just fine.

Do you think this is a firmware issue then?

There are updates, but they're not recent and I'm a little apprehensive about flashing my drive.

I am running an Optiatric 7173A drive.

Other than firmware anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem. I flashed my drive and updated all my drivers. Nothing worked. Tech support has no idea how to fix it, they gave up on me. My drive works and I can install it on my roommate's computer. It's not the discs. Just wasted $40

Hey there--

I've consulted a couple people about this issue and I am guessing from what I've read that the problem may be resolved if you upgrade your firmware. If you want to email me (2KElizabeth (at symbol) 2KGames (dot) com) I can get you some better support to help you out. Just tell me you're from the CivFanatics thread!
