This is to narrow down the choices of civ selection amongst the vanilla civs. There will be a final run-off poll between vanilla and PTW/C3C civs. I'm doing it this way since there's only a maximum of 20 options per poll.

these polls matter on the map CT, if we have an archipelago map seafaring trait is a must, otherwise it is useless

The last polls (which I just saw were unnoficial) were pretty much all random. A seafaring civ will still start on the coast. Even if we get a desert pangaea as Byzantine, it's a nice challenge. Besides, that's like saying "Expansionist depends on the map size" in vanilla Civ3. i.e., Archipelago nullifies the expansionist trait.

Not necessarily, Blackhole. I've found plenty of use for ships even on pangaea maps. And, to be quiet honest, do we really need to pick the absolute "best" Civ to play as? We're all competant players, let's just pick whatever Civ we want.

There was a burgeoning discussion about this here, but I understand we're in a bit of a time constraint. I'll just repost what I posted in that thread:

I'm not sure how we go about decided what Civ to play, but I'll list my personal preferances anyway:

1. Ottomans. Historically a very powerful empire with a rich and unique culture. They conquered large parts of Europe and the Middle East, imposing their customs and government upon a diverse group of people. However, there were also skilled in diplomacy, and were a major factor in European politics up until the first World War. Their traits are excellent, and their UU looks very impressive. Definately my first choice.

2. Netherlands. If we wanted to play a nation unlike the one we played in DG5 (Japan), this would be the Civ to do it. The Netherlands were powerful traders and diplomats who rarely, if ever, used force to influence world politics. There were, at one point, the premiere center for trade and commerce in Europe. Their traits are a bit mixed (I'm not sure Seafaring will come in very handy), but Agriculture will be very useful for the early parts of the game; and their UU looks to be a very strong defender.

3. Mayans. Who could resist the chance to turn one of history's underdogs into a dominant World Power? To be honest, I don't know that much about Mayan culture, other than that they were much less warlike than their neighbors the Aztecs. Still, their traits look very good, and if I understand "enslavement" correctly their UU could come in very handy early on.

4. Byzantines. With all our debates and feuds, how can we not play as the Byzantines? :D

Mayans... good triats and should be a challange later in the game. Instead of us just dominating like usual.

I almost wish "Random New Civ" was an option, for while I love the Ottomans for their traits and UU, it would just be too frustrating to have Sipahi and not be able to use them to full advantage. As for the Mongols - I haven't been able to play a normal game as the Mongols after playing the GOTM version with the Mongol hoardes - the real PTW civ was just too disappointing. Going to have to pick something though....

I would have preferred to see a poll based on traits, multiple choice with the top two traits being selected. Follow that with a multiple choice civ poll containing all the civs with at least one of the selected traits, and then a runoff poll.

That is the way how we should always decide who our nation should be.

Why?

We're all competant Civ players. We don't need to choose the most game-friendly traits just because it's easier. Let's choose a Civ with interesting characteristics--both in the game and in history. There was an effort in DG5 to make use of the historical traits of the Japanese (the sense of "honor" as well as their historically isolationist slant towards the rest of the world). I would much rather we pick a civilization based on those traits rather than the in-game ones.

In the runoff poll, I would like to have Random set up as a third option, if we would like to gamble in place of two crappy Civs we do not want.

If civs are in the runoff poll, doesn't it mean that they won they majority of choices and therefore we want them? And there are no crappy civs, just gotta know how to play them.

Well, Random should still be an option, no one can deny us that option.

I had intended to set up polls similar to DS's system, but I got preempted.

Sorry YNCS, big egos, powers, past animosities, sense of pride and all those things, as well as no initial acknowledged leadership entity prior to this month, has superceded sound planning, timeframes, deadlines, decent arguments and fair discussions and polls.
Well, you will see that this may or may not be a rough ride...

If going with strictly the PTW and C3C civs. The the Ottomans should be the choice to go along with.
