Civ specific Dawn of Man

If you don't want to use any extra programs (tortoiseSVN or something similar), then download the GNU tarball from here: http://rfceurope.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/rfceurope/
This way you download the whole mod every time (not just the modified files) but it's always the latest SVN version

Thank you.

Regarding Kiev: I understand many people dislike my suggestion. Why haven't you offered alternatives? As far as the Wikipedia summary goes, the primary problem with anti-normanist theories is that the support for them largely comes from dislike of the normanist theory. (The inspiration for my suggestion came mostly from http://www.thegreatcourses.com/tgc/courses/course_detail.aspx?cid=3910 which of course has vikings as the main focus).

Agreed, I would also like to see some other alternatives

Btw, I am with the "norman theory" myself, but still found your Kievan text going overboard on this. It really was too agressive, maybe even insulting for the slavic ukranians - the nation you are playing with.
The text should mention that the ruling class and the leader (thus you, the player too) were of Norse/Varangian origin in the beginning, but other than that it's about the kievans = the original slavic population and the varangians assimilated into it.

EDIT: I imagined something like this:
... after several wars against Byzantium you decide with some of your fellow Varangians to settle down. The lands you just set yout foot on seems perfect for this, and the slavic people living there accept you as their leader. Life is good, the land is fertile, you and your descendants will surely lead your new nation, the Kievan Rus into glory.

Yaroslav = Slavic name means something like "strongly glorious"
His father was Vladimir = Slavic name means "possessor of the world"
His grandfather was Sviatoslav = Slavic name means "sacred glorious"

Nicke, you are ukranian, right?
Can you update the kievan city name maps?
It would be a huge help, I have a hard time in finding enough both historical and important ukranian city names in those areas

I consider Rurik and his entourage to be Scandinavian and anti-normanist theories as born from false patriotism, but yeah, the text is overboard. Something like Absinthe's
and the slavic people living there accept you as their leader. Life is good, the land is fertile, you and your descendants will surely lead your new nation, the Kievan Rus into glory.
is fine, though.

Adjusted the Dawn of Man screen
It should look like this:

So Hungary is the one still missing? The Kiev one in the first post could be replaced with the updated suggestion.

Also, the Byzantine one is nagging me. On the one hand, Justinian only started to wield influence at 517 and became emperor at 524 or so (might be 527?), so the text shouldn't be directed towards him according to the standard. On the other hand, it is just a few years, and he is so much more famous than the then-reigning Anastasius.

The first page isn't totally up-to-date, I changed many minor things in the xml files (including the Kievan changes).
I'm also not that happy with Byzantium, we should improve that
But I have a first draft for Hungary ;)

Show us please. I'll help with it. (That is, criticise it heavily :D No, seriously, I have all hope in you. Interesting though that Hungary was left last...We are such a troublesome nation :D)

Of course, I plan to post all texts "final" version here before the next version of RFCE is up
Feel free to post if you don't like something, or just notice any spelling mistakes
For example, Bulgaria:
After many years of civil war, your father had finally united your people in Great Bulgar, north of the Black Sea. After his death, however, pushed by the Khazar hordes, you and your brothers had to divide the Bulgarians yet again and leave your old home in different directions.[NEWLINE][NEWLINE]It is the year 680 AD. After years of travel through snow and heat, mountains and swamps, you and 50 000 followers finally reached the northern borders of the Eastern Roman Empire. Tired of traveling with no home, you gather your people for one last push, to cross the Danube river and to challenge the mighty Empire itself; to claim this lustful land as yours forever.

PS: Hungary is only last, because she is the most important nation ;)

"50 000 followers" ?
Is it another one of those rough modern historian estimates or a byzantine historian's rough estimate? Numbers (other than dates) seem like out of place in a dawn of man text imho. Better suited in the pedia text.

I'll think about the Hungarian one, too. But not today; already too tired.

I added that from rrosen's suggestion, not sure where did he got it
Sounded more or less beleiveable to me
We can of course remove it if adding such details to the text is unpopular

The game spans for hundreds of years, therefor I think the scope should be bigger. Exact number of followers is one such thing.

So, what's the agreement, should I remove the 50000 followers or not?
Also, any more improvements on the existing texts?

I'd say it is a general issue, do you want specificity regarding the exact situation when the nation was founded, or more general texts with a longer scope in time and space? What was in before was as general as could be, with the same broad statement for everybody. I like specificity, but you could perhaps already guess that :)

Yep, this is a general question.
Whatever we want to follow here will be the base guideline to the other texts

Just replace "50000 followers" with "many followers". ;)

I will simply remove it, if we choose this direction

3Miro, I saw you changed the Dawn of Man title to: RHYE'S AND FALL OF CIVILIZATIONS - EUROPE
What's the official name of the mod?
I always thought it's Rhye's and Fall of Europe (or Rhye's and Fall: Europe)

Byzantium-

It is the year 500 A.D. After many glorius centuries under Rome, the great Constantine saw fit to split the mighty empire into two parts.

While Rome will always have a place in your people's hearts, Constantinople is now the heart of the most glorius nation on Earth!

Now you, Justinian, rule as the mighty Roman Emperor. Your nation is strong, but the barbarians may be stronger. Your people have faith that you can lead thier mighty nation through the coming storm. Will you prevail, and lead the Byzantine Empire through another 1,000 years of glory?

Thanks, I really like it :goodjob:
Will probably merge in a few parts of the previous text into this, and we are done for Byzantium :)
