Civ V Cracked Already

I don't think anyone, including Fraxis, ever thought that Civ 5 wouldn't be pirated. People have been cracking Steam games for a very long time.

If developer makes a good game, people will support it anyway, because they love it.
Many developers dont release demo versions of their games either. Why would one buy a game if he has not tried it yet.

Civ4 was cracked in matter of days also after release, look how many copies it has sold. It's just because the game is good, not because it has uber hardcore DRM.

It's like drugs. Drugs cause a big percent of crime right, if they would be legal in specific amounts, the crime rate would drop almost to zero. Proven fact in some countries where the drugs are legalized to certain amounts.

There is a demo for trial! There is no excuse to pirate the game.

Blizzard hit a sweet spot with Starcraft II. They control mulitplayer through Bnet, so at least this aspect of the game is crack-proof.

Who cares?

I'll be the first to admit I usually download games from torrent sites; the ones I wouldn't buy anyway if you know what I mean, it's the same with movies - There is some I download and watch that I would never dream of going to see or buy on DVD. I buy games like Civ, Football Manager, Total War games and Paradox titles because I am a fan and want to enjoy future releases from these companies, but when I get games from torrent sites, they're the ones I would never buy and just play for something to do at times, I am of the belief that this is not harming the company that made it in any was as if it was not available so easily I simply would not bother buying it.

This is my view on piracy, you may or may not agree with it and for the record I have bought Civilization 5 on steam via paypal and have the reciepts to prove it.

This is why Steam is so stupid, because it only hurts the paying customers.

It's a plus for me. I don't have to worry about having the latest version, I can save my games to the cloud (useful when playing on multiple computers), the Steam community features are neat when chatting with friends who play as well, I don't need to worry about backups, I can legally play and activate it for as many computers I want, and so on.

Sure, no surprise it was cracked. If people don't mind waiting longer for updates, DLC and expansions, that's okay. It's not avoidable. Personally, I prefer being dependent on Steam than on some cracker crew that will sooner than later interest in updating the cracked version with patches.

And lastly, I either pay for what I use, or I don't use it at all if I don't agree with the conditions a product comes with. But self-discipline isn't very common in today's society. :)

I don't think you can play online with a pirated Steam version either. (Well, I'm gonna find out for sure as I'm gonna run some tests with it on a Mac.) At least, in most Steam games it prevents you from playing online if it is pirated. More and more games, not just Steam ones are requiring people to enter a unique CD key to gain access to servers.

Piracy is over-rated. Most of the people who "steal" the game were never going to buy it in the first place.

:p

And some of them would have. There's lost $ in there.

Pirates are cheapskates with an inflated sense of entitlement. Nothing more.

Also I agree with this. Cracked code leaves the window open enough especially since you're voluntarily installing all components. Kids don't think of that though. It just adds up when family vacation time comes along and dad's bank account is $1.04

This happened to someone I know, it's not the end of the world. In the worst case, you just call your bank and say you have fraudulent charges. They investigate, you are covered, change account numbers

A Cheap skate would be someone who waits until the game is in the bargain bin before purchase

A Pirate is just a excuse for bad business practices.

Stardock and Egosoft at least still treat customers right, lots of patches and FREE content added after purchase if you register the game, yes their games get pirated alot, but they also get purchased alot, and the customers appreciate the service.

Civ 5 just lacks content, and punishes us in the name of protecting the copy right and shares of a company.

The thing is that many people already have had issues with Steam not letting them play the game. In this case I don't care if there's an easy solution such as restarting or edit some ini-file; I still would feel raped. And actually, it's illegal as well, because the still market the game as something you buy, and not something you rent.

How does Steam hurt customers?

Because

Option 1) Connecting steam account WAIT..

Option 2) Looks like your trying to start in offline mode.. YOU SURE BRO?? Okay... WAIT

So much for that 'you just gotta put up with steam when you install' BS

This is why Steam is so stupid, because it only hurts the paying customers.

False if you pay attention to all the DRM schemes out there Steam is by far the best solution, you have offline play with steam, 1 time activation, lose the disk you can install the game with 1 click in the steam client, no install limits, lose connection while playing you just don't get achivments.

Now lets compare this to EA... Disk or download only not both, 5 Install Limit then you have to re buy or contact customer support and beg for another install, Secure-ROM on top of it

Or Ubisoft... No Offline play 100% stable internet connection required for all games even if they have no multiplayer, if you are 40 minutes in to a game last save was 20 minutes ago you lose connection for 1 min and you are kicked from the game and it does not save for you, you just lost 20 mins of work

The thing is that many people already have had issues with Steam not letting them play the game.

A small percentage of people have issues no matter what format a game is sold in. If it's a CD/DVD, their drives can't read the medium, if it's authentication they have problems with their router, etc. There are no formats that work flawlessly for everyone under any condition. It's inevitable.

In this case I don't care if there's an easy solution such as restarting or edit some ini-file; I still would feel raped.

If problems that have such simple fixes upset a player, the PC platform isn't the best choice for them.

And actually, it's illegal as well, because the still market the game as something you buy, and not something you rent.

If you look at any software license for commercial products, you never actually "own" anything. You have only bought a license that enables you to legally use the product. It isn't yours. No difference here.

Steam is about as reasonable a protection method as there has ever been. Just never having to find the CD/DVD or download patches manually makes it a massive win for me. I don't feel inconvenienced in the slightest.
