Civ VII Requires 3rd-Party Account: 2K Account [Update: Required for Multiplayer Only]

Does that include mods as an "online feature"?
Why on earth would it? Probably Workshop support will be available.

Also, would like to give kudos for the quick response time and clarification Sarah.

I also just noticed the Steam page specifies HDR support. Really excited about that! I’m sure the game will be beautiful.

This is one of those things that rarely matter if the game is good, but suddenly matter if the game is bad and people can't point out a reason why. Make the game the GOAT and no one will care.

I guess online play will require the Sony online fee anyway... so that will be a concern only on PC for me. (still debating on which platform to play it, as Titan Quest II comes on PS5 too, with the same issue)
Same thing with likely with the Switch's successor and definitely Xbox.

I'm against it in general, but not so much that I won't play fantastic games because of it. I am nearing the 3000 mark in VI so I think I can safely say I enjoy the game.

Hey all! Wanted to chime in here and say we've clarified our Steam info. A 2K account will be required to access online features. You'll be able to start the game and play single player without an account.

Ya I was playing single player this morning and had no issues. Unaware this was even a thing till I saw this thread

Oh of course. It's just that I have a PS5 and not any of the other two. (didn't have PS4 so I can catch up all releases that interested me, as to Switch I would only play docked, so I find the price a little too spicy for the moment. And I've never been a big fan of Xbox)

I would not call Civ6 multiplayer a fantastic game. To be honest neither single player. Titan Quest, on the other hand... but I would not invest too much on multiplayer probably, but that could itch me at some point. Definitely not a reason to subscribe. I probably will buy both PS5 games versions first before to switch on PC, hoping they will get a box release. (eventhough I would probably not re-sell them ever, so it doesn't matter as much as other games I suppose)

I prefer Civ5 over Civ6, by a far margin. Had a hella' fun game on Immortal last week, I dominated the AI militarilly very much into a domination victory. (my following Deity run sucked, only 4 cities and science victory) As to Civ6, I'm preparing a list of what chimes annoying to me, and there's definitely too many things. (it's mostly annoyances, but I'm definitely disgusted by them)

"Why on earth would it?"

Lots of games have moved in that direction.

Also, the game is available on more than just steam, but other platforms too. With other companies moves to "allow other platforms to use mods" and move to in-game, in-house mod platform solutions, I would not be so certain that workshop will be the modding platform for Civ7.

With the normalisation in games recently to gatekeep mods in solutions that allow all platforms to use mods, it is absolutely reasonable to think a 2K account may be required for modding.

If (as the thread title implies) the 2K account is only needed for MP, that answers my question. Doesn't it?

I think this is a typo and meant is Civ VII and not Civ III.

Thanks so much for answering this. When I was posting often here re: historical stuff I'd often get these sorts of questions and not be able to answer them, either because I didn't know, or commenting on these sorts of features wasn't in my job description and I probably shoudn't be doing so (the case here, I think). So I'm so so happy to have you here to answer these things and to speak more officially with the community!
