i don't understand the end game warfare very well. my strategy is mostly about building as many nukes as possible. and you don't really even need any units for city capture; with enough bombs, you can reduce the opponents pop and land to the stone age. mounting an invasion at this point is not necessary to take an opponent out of the game, unless you need the land for domination victory.

now, the SDI tends to make this strategy prohibitively expensive but not any less effective. and the united nations can mess you up, but not if you always defy non-proliferation when it comes up.

if i end up in a modern era, space ship FTW kind of game, part of the reason i default to a peaceful strategy is that the number of clicks and lagging and jacked up groupings makes staging all of my units a nightmare. fighters on carriers in a task force with transports, no thanks. with a nuke, devastation is just two clicks away.

so but then there are all the reasons not to use nukes, and i end up going for peace wins. granted, most games are decided by early warfare, usually with cannons or rifles or lately cuirassiers, but often earlier.

but to get back to the original rambling post that i put up last night:
if there were some late-late game super unit that could capture cities without melting the tile improvements to a hellish moonscape (like with nukes and combined arms and more slow boring clicking) then i would like the game better. the various problems that affect big maps and unit selection are unlikely to be fixed. i don't think firaxis is going to make another patch for this game, because they are probably too stupid to figure out how to make money off of it. the existence of this forum, about a very old video game by video game standards, is in itself compelling evidence that an audience is there, ready to spend their bucks.

i digress. since the selection mechanics cannot be easily changed, but the game mechanics can be, then i think there should be a super death robot, like voltron or big 0, that has strength +80, movement +7, and maybe a minus against city attack so that mob. infantry en masse are the only defense. it would let you zip across the opponent's territory and capture cities, just like you can with paratroopers and nukes and about a thousand clicks, and let you do it in mere dozens.

civ4.5.

ultimate naval unit. super sub. picks target. evades missiles and bombers 198%. so. equals lots of dead planes.

ult land unit. giant deth robots. explained elsewhere. replaces gunships.

pen ult. def unit. security drone. comes after mob. arty. has bonus against air units +city def. replaces mob. infantry.

ult. city raider. mod. armor. as is.

replace stealth bomber w/ 7th gen. air superiority striker.

I like your thoughts. Replace cavalery with closeup fighting raptors imo.

Try Next War, which is included with BtS. Run it as a mod, not a scenario, turn off time victory, and you can run around stomping the AI with giant death robots as much as you want...

I almost never make it to nukes. The game is usually done by then. If you're going for a space victory, don't waste your time even building the manhattan project. Put those hammers into building science instead. The trick to the space race is to use every possible resource to tech as fast as possible up to where you can finally build space shuttle parts. Spending resources to get the Manhattan project and a bunch of nukes will only make the games take longer.

Yeah the problem of huge late game armies runs deep in the mechanics of the game, there's no easy way to fix it.

Adding some uber units is a good start, and relatively easy to mod.

What would also be good, but not easy to mod, is the ability to merge many old units into a few up-to-date ones, rather than stacking them which gets stupid and unmanageable when you have hundreds. After all you can take unit+cash = better unit. Why not unit+unit = better unit.
