Civ4 Complete Edition Coming Next Tuesday

Anyone know if this will include an updated manual? So many retail PC games these days come in thin DVD sleeves with a quickstart guide at best.

I have Civ IV Complete from Steam (the olde version lacking Colonization), but might buy this release so I can have the discs, manual, and box, plus Colonization of course.

I can answer some of this for you!

In the switch to a single DVD, we also made an effort to use less packaging. The game ships in a BioBox, made by Amaray, which is a DVD sized case. In addition to being recyclable, it is designed to be fully biodegradable.

As the manuals would number in the hundreds of pages (and not fit in either the DVD sized Amaray or the thicker case), we've included a new condensed Quick Start Manual that reviews the basics of Civilization and Colonization, and have included full original English and French manuals as PDFs on the disc.

Hope that helps.

Maybe since you work for 2K you can answer my question about the DRM? Does DRM-free imply that it can be played without the DVD in the drive? If so that is a BIG selling point...might want to make that clear. Please clarify if you can! Thanks.

I can't answer for sure, but my 90% certainty guess is that the DRM-free means that there is no SecuROM and such. As such, it will probably need the DVD in the drive.

Dang! Well, thanks for your effort in trying to answer my question. I know it seems silly to care, but it is nice to be able to carry around your laptop without all sorts of extra discs and be able to plays games wherever you want and whenever you want.

The digital options (Steam, Direct2Drive, etc.) are your best bet for a laptop. For me the convenience wins out over having an actual box. :)

That having been said, I personally don't know if Civ 4 Complete will or will not require a disc check.

Jon

Thanks for answering, Elizabeth and Jon. :)

This upcoming complete edition will be available via those digital sites too, at around the same time?

Thanks for answering my question, Elizabeth. :goodjob:

I'll probably buy Colonization to get a big box and manual.

No CD Check -- nothing.

 :goodjob:

with this move Take2 has won at least one customer for this product :D
Paying a bit more for Colonization (I have all the other Civ-games) and getting rid of Safedisk is a deal :)

No Disc check. No DRM. This is perfect for me. Keeping track of discs is nothing but a hassle. I have all parts of Civ IV. Putting all parts on one DVD (It's one DVD right?) with all the patches done and not having it in the drive to play is just awesome. I'm getting this just for the added Convenience alone.

 I bought Prince of Persia for the lack of DRM first, graphics and gameplay second. So for me, getting a DRMless version of Civ IV is a no-brainer.:goodjob:

I really hope this means a new version of Civilization is coming out soon. I mean, it has been years since Civ 4 came out and, while the expansions have been nice, I really want something new. I just hope I won't need a new computer to play it...

Amen to both wishes.

I actually hope I'll need a new computer, that way I'll have an excuse! :p

Besides, my computer doesn't support good graphics and I want that (also either way I want to play huge maps).

As a Linux user, thank you, thank you, thank you! Copy protection is one of the biggest hurdles to getting Windows programs running under Wine on Linux. You have a sale from me because of this. Civ 4 does run under Wine, but sometimes requires doing things that can't be mentioned on this site.

You know, Civ 4 isn't that far away from being able to say they officially support Wine as a platform. Maybe Civ 5 could be? Just saying..

DRM means digital right management. Copy protection basicly. The worst forms require you to activate the software and only lets you install a limited amount of times. It also means something as lowly as a disk check.

Without DRM, you can install it as many times as you want AND you can put the disc away for safe-keeping, as you won't need it to play, just install.

So if you're like me and you have 5 computers between me, the wife, and 3 kids, and Hundreds of games (All legally bought), this is very cool.

(By the way, if you like older DRM-less games, you might want to check out www.gog.com (Good old games) They have a nice forum over there.) Not trying to pimp gog, honest.

For me, the fact that some companies, with a straight face, expect me to buy one copy of a game for each of the computers in my house so that I can play with my family members or friends under the same roof, is laughable and insulting.

Not that it matters since I have Civ4 + 2 Expantion packs. Would Civ4 Complete Edition (The one w/ Colonization) be available on Steam?

For me, the fact that some companies, with a straight face, expect me to buy one copy of a game for each of the computers in my house so that I can play with my family members or friends under the same roof, is laughable and insulting.

That's why I prefer the Steam way. One copy of a game one one account, can play the game on any computer w/ Steam installed. I wont touch a game that has a piece of software that limits the number of installations you can make.

I heard Colonization isn't that good of a game without adding a Mod?

It figures I just get back into playing the game after 2yrs not being able to. Buy the Gold edition now this edition comes out. How many bloody editions they going to make? :crazyeye::lol:

:goodjob:

I've heard there are serious game balance issues with the later game.

Are there mods to improve this?
