Just been playing conquest & I kept losing city tiles as neighbouring civ expanded its borders. Eventually the cities revolted & turned (no loyalty these days!!). Is this because I didn't have enough culture?

To McFarty - Welcome to CFC   :wavey:

Culture was the culprit that took your city. If you have cities along an opponent's border, you need to build a couple of buildings that will produce some culture. This maintain and protect your tiles around your city.

Cheers for that. Thought it might be. If you've got more than one neighbour on a continent, do you suggest wiping one out early? I've tried it a couple of times but the other one seems to race ahead. Does war slow down research?

Bad news: War will slow down your research. Good News: It will slow down their research too. You have to find a happy balance between kicking the AI's butt:devil: and maitaining you empire.

You can also reduce the chance of revolt by putting military units in the city. This is only a short term solution until you get culture going, but it does give you some more time. I mainly use this on cities that I have just captured, as cities that I built myself usually don't have have culture problems as I concentrate on building culture in my border cities.

Once you have the technology, theatres are one of the fastest and easiest solutions -- they crank out 3 culture per turn. In many cases, this will be enough (or at least a darn good start) to keep your city tiles.
