Civ4 PitBoss Available

A few questions. Our clan has been using PitBoss for a while now - first for vanilla Civ IV, then Warlords, and lately with ViSa mod 2.1.

1) Did the way the PitBoss server works change at all from Civ IV to Warlords? I seem to recall that in the original PitBoss all each computer needed to do was have a heartbeat with the PitBoss server itself. But in Warlords, it seems to need to grab a heartbeat with every online player. For our games using ViSa mod (going heavily through a wireless connection), it's brought our computers to their knees.

2) Should it reasonably be expected that a P-III computer with a 100 Mips connection should be able to host a Warlords PitBoss? How about if it has a GigE connection?

3) Is there any benefit to using PitBoss on a P-III if all your players will be always be playing multiplayer at the same time and have P-IV or above computers? I'm thinking that maybe the most powerful computer among us should host, while the rest of us should just direct IP to them instead. Could a P-III Pitboss actually be a bottleneck?

Thanks, - Chuck

I can tell you that the model from the beginning was based upon taking MP and allowing players to log in and out while the game persists. Based on that, I'd say the answer to 1) is that it hasn't changed, and 2) and 3) would be the same as in a multiplayer setting, if you can find the answer to that. I think the only difference between running the server and running a regular game is that you don't need much graphics capability on the machine running the server...

This application has failed to start becuase boost_python-vc7-mt-1-32.dll was not found. IIRC I had a similar problem and it was caused by running PitBoSs in the wrong directory. I suggest you do a search and find out which directory boost_python-vc7-mt-1-32.dll is in. You will find it in the CoreDLL library, also in the Sid Meier's Civilization 4 directory and in the Warlords directory (assuming you have Warlords) You need to run PitBoSs in the same directory that the executable file for the game and the .dll are in.

One other point, PitBoSs is a different program in Warlords and Vanilla Civ IV. With Warlords it comes on the disc (or with the 2.08 patch, I am not sure - but you have to patch anyway.) It is a download for Vanilla and the two programs are not compatible.

Well i can't find the right directory.

Are you running Vanilla Civ IV or Warlords?

Which dircetory is boost_python-vc7-mt-1-32.dll in? The default location (including subfolders) to search is C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4

The problem was i got confused because the game somehow upon installation created 2 seperate civ 4 folders. One fully featured version located inside the folder program files and a seperate largly empty version inside the folder My Documents. Also the installlation program claimed that it was only installed in My Documents.

I presume the directory in My Documents is for Mods. I find that screenshots end up in that directory.

Do you have PitBoSs running now?

I think someone else may have asked this question earlier but I couldnt find an answer to it. How would I change the turn timer once I have statrted running a pitboss game? I tried changing the ini file which I didnt think would work and it didnt. Any ideas gratefully received.

You cannot change the turn timer once the game is running, sorry (not without hacking the save file anyway, which i'm not sure if that's been done yet).

There is a utility to do that, I've successfully used it in a couple pitboss games (at least one of which was Warlords, IIRC).

That would be a savefile hack fix then :) What I meant to say was that PTBS does not give you a way to do that with the stock program.

Aloha,
Is there a way to change the defualt autosave name? I'm running 2 instances of pb and the autosave names conflict.

Mahalos!

okay...
1.) is there any Patches i need for pitboss?
2.) Is there a certain place i have save Pitboss at?

there is a pitboss application with the game.. don't think you need anything else if you have patched the game. Yes it will work with either version of 3.13. Should be pretty selfexplanatory to use(just open the pitboss program you already have).

I don't already have a pitboss program. I can save something as a pitboss save, but I can't open up the Pitboss window. Is it the pitbosswizard.py? If so, what program do I use to open it?

Assuming that you installed the game normally you should find the Pitboss program in the Beyond the Sword folder.

Look in Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization4\Beyond the Sword

The Pitboss porogram is called Civ4BeyondSword_Pitboss.exe
