Civ5 manual errata

All manuals have errors. Generally we forgive them because they are printed, so they can't be edited and because they're released after the game so we're not bored reading them searching for errors.

Another gunship. But I still don't think they get defensive bonuses (wouldn't make sense really).

I don't know if this is a manual error, but it is inconsistant with the live streams I've seen recently: a lot of the interface screen shots show several scroll icons all along the top portion of the screen. Page 24 illustrates it, there is one for research, diplomacy, unit list, city list, etc. However, in the live feeds, I've only ever seen one scroll icon: located to the left of the social policies icon (which is on the right side of the screen). Maybe its a newer/older build than what 2k Greg was playing last week?

Many screens from the manual are outdated. Must be it.

I tend to use the civilopedia more than the manual (atleast in civ4) and that should be updated (atleastI hope so).

The only worry I have is that they seems to have changed the shortcuts around. F12 should always be the civilopedia, now it looks like I'll be quick loading a whole lot until my fingers starts to remember the correct short-cuts for civ5 (manual page 21)...

English manual, page 154:
"Following is a list of all the Wonders in the game, including Natural Wonders and the effects and requirements of each."

The list doesn't mention any Natural Wonders at all.

Perhaps they meant to say National Wonders which it does include?

Could be an interface option. e.g. expanded interface vs. minimal interface.

um, there are quite a few wonders effect that was different from what we knew... maybe the ones we saw are outdated, and they did some readjustment... but those that showed in the manual... seems a bit let down...

I'm not adding new reports to the OP at the moment as there are quite a lot of them. If anyone wants to help out by condensing some of them into a post, it'd be much appreciated. Everything from post 49 down hasn't yet been added.

Well, I have time to kill, I'll give it a shot. For sake of ease, I'm ignoring language errors (past tense/present tense agreement and focusing on factual errors:

Spoiler errors :

p. 142 and 213, SS parts cost 1000. p. 218 they cost 800

The clear land times on page 86 do not match with the total times on page 88.

Floating Gardens p. 164 available Optics p. 214 available wheel.

p. 30, mountains are listed as giving a 25% combat modifier, but they're also impassible except to gunships (which get no defensive bonuses).

Courthouse p. 164 p. 214 - ought to mention that this building cannot be purchased with gold.

p. 47 Ranged combat - See post 63, just generally messed up

Old interface - pp. 20, 21, 24

p. 117 - "To win a cultural victory, you must acquire five complete “branches” of social policies – that is, you must own all policies within six different branches."

p. 209 - Longbow range listed as 2

(no page) - Burial Tomb listed as requiring Theology

p. 61 - inconsistency with the range of the Great General's effects

Windmills (Spanish version) - says they must be built in a city on a hill (all others say "must not")

Page 89. Trading Post increases output of a tile by 1 gold.
Page 220. Trading Post yields +2 Gold.

p 217 Status of Liberty

p. 71 - lists city radius as two tiles

p. 155, 217 - Forbidden Palace listed as having different effects

p. 143 doesn't mention that Ballistas need to set-up before attacking, but p. 209 does state this.

p. 98 Spanish version:
"El Racionalismo no puede estar activo a la vez que la Autocracia."
Which translates as Rationalism can not be active as the same time as Autocracy. It should be "Devoción" ("Piety") instead of Autocracy.

Page 88: Farms can be build anywhere but on ice.
Page 220: Farms can be build on grassland, plains and desert.
Detail: Page 207: "Construct a Farm: I" is in there twice.

p. 154 - "Following is a list of all the Wonders in the game, including Natural Wonders and the effects and requirements of each." Should be National Wonders

Here's a list of things I spotted that aren't in the first post (I haven't read through the thread so they might have been mentionned already). Some are quite minor and pedantic. They are from the English version - I haven't checked if they affect other versions.

Factual errors:
  • p47 - Archer strength: should say Combat Strength 4, Ranged Strength 6 (see p126 & p208)
  • p72 - under "Improving the Land" says workers can build schools(?)
  • p83 - says research agreement gives 15% boost to research (top of page) - should be a free tech
  • p95 - says Patronage slows city-state influence decline by 50% - should be 25% (see p204)
  • p177 - "British" should arguably be replaced by "English" in the 2nd paragraph
  • p178 - arguably should say "Britain and Europe" instead of "England and Europe" (since it's talking in geographic terms)
  • p186 - should say the Roman Empire covered "much of Britain" instead of "much of England" (it covered England, Wales and the Scottish Lowlands)
  • p190 - doesn't specify America's unique trait
  • p204 - "Free Speech" effect unclear
  • p207 - "Construct a Farm" appears twice
  • p209, 211 - says British unique unit - should be English

Grammatic errors:
  • p51 - under "Legal and Illegal Moves" there are two full stops at the end of the first sentence
  • p55 - under "Which Units Can Fight," "great people" should be capitalized (as it is elsewhere)
  • p59 - just above "City Combat Stats" there is a space missing between "see" and '"Victory' (the smart quotes before "Victory" need to be the other way round)
  • p71 - full stop missing just above "Constructing Buildings"
  • p74 and p107 - the spelling "Coliseum" is used whereas everywhere else "Colosseum" is used
  • p96 - In the first paragraph "City-States" is capitalized but elsewhere is lower-case
  • p103 - under "Terrain Types" it should be "Oases" instead of "Oasis"(?)
  • p178 - needs a capital "U" in "European union"
  • p181 - just above "Unique Trait" the full stop should be inside the quotation marks

Image errors:
  • p25 - top image, the city-state's status doesn't fit in the column; the civilization names don't match the icons
  • p64 - image does not shrink back to size when you move cursor away
  • p113 - image covers text
  • p118 - same problem as p25 image

Some miscellaneous observations:
  • p28-34 - Lake does not appear as a terrain or a feature (but is on p206)
  • p63 - says there is list of how to acquire XPs in "Charts and Tables" but it doesn't seem to be there
  • p108 - says "pissed off" - perhaps "annoyed" would be more appropriate?
  • p109 - says there are several ways to enter a Golden Age but only lists two. What about Social Policies?
  • p117 - do annexed or puppet city-states get a vote?

As the first person to ever read a license agreement in the history of law (including the lawyers writing them, apparently), I found this pretty hilarious (p.227 of the English manual):

What the hell does Nintendo have to do with anything? Did Take Two copy-paste this license agreement from Revolution?

As the first person to ever read a license agreement in the history of law (including the lawyers writing them, apparently), I found this pretty hilarious (p.227 of the English manual)...

Excellent! Even more hilarious since they author actually refers to the copyright section on p.3

On to more important matters: I got a production bonus when chopping forest. I could not find anything in the manual that mentioned this mechanism.

These errors are on the back of the Tech Tree foldout that was included with the instruction manual inside the game box. Where the Social Policy rules are displayed in graphs and tree diagrams there are the following errors:

* Inconsistency between the Chart and Tree

+ Monarchy: Chart specifies Gold cost for buying land is reduced by 50%; tree states another ability entirely, may have been confused with Oligarchy
o Liberty
+ Collective Rule: Chart specifies new cities start with 50% food necessary to gain a second citizen; tree specifies that new cities start with a second citizen
+ Citizenship: Different percentages describing worker construction rates
+ Republic: Chart does not specify that the bonus applies to every city

o Honor
+ Professional Army: Chart specifies reduced cost to upgrading military units; Tree specifies a different bonus regarding unit supply costs
o Piety
+ Organized Religion: Amount of Happiness Needed to Start a Golden Age is 25% on the chart and 33% on the tree
+ Mandate of Heaven: a percentage of excess happiness is specified on the chart but not on the tree
+ Reformation: Chart specifies a 6 turn Golden Age while tree specifies 10 turns
