Civ5 PDF manual is here!

German manual, page 211 is missing, going to page 211 takes you to a page 213 in some other language.
The most important page, the shortcut list, is missing in the german manual! This looks like a conspiracy!

smarter AI huh?

page14:
On levels higher than Prince, the AIs receive increasing bonuses in city growth, production,
and technology. They may also get additional starting units and free techs to boot.

Cheating is smart.

I was just surprised to see the phrase 'pissed off' in the manual for a game rated 10+.

On page 10

the set up game screen

the picture shows a game being set up, and the americans selected,

but their special power is

units spend only 1 movement point entering any tile next to a river, 25% faster border growth from culture

Im sure it's now just

america can buy tiles for 25% cheaper...

I have worked on projects with manuals in the past though, so my guess is thats a really old build with only the UI correct and the data wrong.

The destroyer is barely stronger than a frigate???

Literally only a couple of points of strength and ranged strength more. This is lunacy!

Yeah I thought the same thing, then I realized the Destroyer is an Industrial Era unit, not a Modern era unit... That might have something to do with it.

page 77

??

The city can work any tile within two spaces of the city that is also within the civilization’s borders, provided as well that it is not being worked by another city.

So did I read correctly? A farm in Civ V can be built anywhere, even without irragation? So if you have a plains tile 2 hexes away from a river, building a farm on it gives it +1 food for a total of 2? Then when fertilizer is researched, that tile is now +3 food?

At Civil Service, farms built by rivers will be +4? FP will be +5?

It would makes sense since food and growth seems to be the "be-all end all" in this game. Not complaining but just want to make sure.

Not that I have virgin ears or anything, but I also was a little surprised at that. It's a first in any game manual for me.

Among other minor changes, the manual states "recommended" processor be a 2.4 GHz quad core whereas Greg's "official system reqs" post says only 1.8.

Change or error?

"Remember that unhappiness is not.permanent. You can always increase your citizens’ happiness — no matter how pissed off they are at you."

Swearing in the official manual? Nothing surprises me anymore.

It's about time Americans join us Europeans on the dark side.

Page 117:

Cultural
To win a cultural victory, you must acquire five complete “branches” of social policies – that
is, you must own all policies within six different branches. Once you’ve done that, the “Utopia
Project” is unlocked. Construct that project and you win a cultural victory. You cannot rush or
purchase this project; it must be constructed.

Good to see the manual made available before the game is released/unlocked

A bit disappointed the manual wont be a provided as a printed 'book' with shop bought versions of the game, but accept this is the way things are going.

I don't find a computer screen the best method for studying a manual, or using a manual for reference. I assume having a paper manual beside you when playing the game is useful to people new to the Civ series who'll be learning as they play.

A lot of people will be perfectly happy with only looking at the manual on a screen, and reading in game help. But for the rest of us it'd be helpful if a printer friendly version of the manual makes an appearance. In it's current style the manual is going to require a horrendous amount of ink to print out, and many of the images are small and can only be seen full size when using a computer.

Saying all that, I know I am going to give into temptation and print it out....;)

Doesn't surprise me either.
Society is becoming increasingly lax about use of traditionally vulgar language.

If you can say :):):):):) on primetime tv, than pissed off in a manual is par for the course.

EDIT: the smiley's I guess mean although it's ok on primetime tv, not ok on civ fanatics. :) It is a female dog I made reference to there.

downloading this on a bus through someone's tethered 3G phone. Computer says it's gonna take an hour. only an hour and a half battery left. :(

So let me get this straight...

Some people are bothered that they put the words "pissed off" in a manual for a game with Nuclear Missiles, Giant Death Robots and an objective to destroy all other civilizations on the planet?

Doesn't surprise me either.
Society is becoming increasingly lax about use of traditionally vulgar language.

To be fair, the use of vulgar language was traditionally looked down upon when it was used in the presence of a lady - as this passage from Trollope demonstrates:
That she-Beelzebub hates him ..." said the archdeacon, permitting himself to use very strong language in his allusion to the bishop's wife. It must be recorded on his behalf that he used the phrase in the presence only of the gentlemen of the party. I think he might have whispered the word into the ear of his confidential friend old Lady Lufton, and perhaps have given no offence; but he would not have ventured to use such words aloud in the presence of ladies.

As Civ V is a computer game, perhaps Firaxis is assuming that no ladies will read the manual?
