Civ5 Sandbox

I would suggest playing a random civ, on a random map... there are so many of both, and all are worth playing, at least once!

Go for a fairly easy difficulty to begin with, definitely one of the 3 lowest... in order to learn the game and how things work, then move up gradually as your knowledge and technique improves.

Playing a random civ will teach you more in the long term than playing a selected one all the time.

Although there's something to be said for picking one civ (preferably a versatile one) and sticking with it for a few games so you can focus on learning the game and experimenting once you know it, rather than learning the idiosyncracies of different civs and how to accommodate them anew every time you play.

I still haven't played most of the game's civs - I pick up a new one every few games (such as Inca this weekend), but more and more I gravitate back to Siam for most games.

My favs are Songhai and Arabia, but there are many good civs, depending on how you want to play it.?

But this game is forever I want a civ I can understand

Why don't you just start a game with say Washington on Panagea, start a city preferably next to a river and scout around with your warrior and then report on what you see after about 10 turns. If you are playing on lower levels you should be fine with this start. Better yet, capture a screen image and post and then I think people can help you on where to go after that.

Why Washington? He doesn't provide many late game bonuses ? other than +1 sight that's OK and the bomber replacement

Well, you are talking about playing sandbox so what does it matter.
Washington will help you scout your surroundings much faster and then in 10 turns report what you run into and then you can get strategy help from there.
Once you move on from basic strategy then you can get into the different Civs and what each brings to the table as far as different strategies are concerned but first you need the basics.

I need to have opinions on civs right now as that is V.I.P and late game bonuses I need to have ironed out now so I need to pick a civ and maybe some general tips then I post screen shots every once and awhile

The best way to learn is just to fire up a game and play. Dont worry so much about specific civs or strategy until you get the basic idea. Don't forget to read the strategy forums and the war academy for some basic tips.
