Civ6 Blog Post - Automation

None of these are arguments against having automation though. Those are arguments for why one shouldn't use it - and yeah, I agree. But automation is not about "perfection", it's about "I don't want to have to deal with this". At the point where I would use automated workers I would literally not care about any of these "problems". I would just build a worker every now and then, and when the game tells me it has used up its charges I would consider building a new one.

Coming into this a little late, but...

I would say that if automation is necessary to make a game mechanic less tedious or more fun just because you no longer have to deal with it, then that game mechanic is fundamentally flawed and shouldn't be in the game in that form.

I think builders are an attempt to address the fact that in Civ V workers were often more tedious than fun...which was bad game design. A limited number of charges and instant building makes them hopefully much more satisfying to use. We'll have to see.

Making sure the game mechanic is fun relies on more than just the mechanic itself.

It also relies on the scale.
Interesting decisions about 5-10 things=interesting and fun
Interesting decisions about 50-100 things=tedious and unfun

Making the decision about what districts to build and where to place them is fun and interesting...a great design mechanic ...If you have maybe a couple dozen cities. If you founded ~100 cities in a normal speed game (and they all reached the population to hold say 6-7 districts, that will be tedious). I am guessing if you go wide by conquest, most players will just leave the AI districts as is (instead of razing/redesigning districts in other ways.

To some degree this can be helped by the UI.
If they have a lens of "tiles that I can improve" that you can use on the mini map to show where I should send builders from my core cities, that would help.
Or a lens for "territory of cities that are housing capped"
and a lens/popup for "cities that can add a new district"

Then they just need to have the ability for you to queue buildings that you can't build yet (you don't have the district/tech/prerequisite buildings).
I should be able to found my capital and queue up barracks, armory, military base (because I know I will want an encampment with those buildings eventually)

****clearing up misconception on this thread builders do not place districts****
