I'm experiencing the same thing as bloh. I've just done a fresh Windows install (XP w SP2), .NET 1.1, and then CivAssist II. When trying to start CivAssist II I get (roughly, translation from Swedish by me):

The application has generated an exception that couldn't be handled.

Process-ID=0xd08 (3336), thread-ID=0x04 (3332)

Click OK if you want to exit the application.
Click Cancel if you want to debug the application.

I haven't had these problems before the Windows reinstall. I have no idea what's causing it. I'd be happy to supply any details you want, if there's anything you could do.

I am also running a swedish computer. This could possible be the probably, that we have swedish language or swedish version of .NET. :)

Can it be the language that is causing that error?

No, it has nothing to do with language, it's something else. The language is added in a .NET Framework Language Pack, try uninstalling it and you'll see nothing happens.

@ainwood: Are there any debugging tools I could use to help you get to the bottom of this? Clicking "Cancel" on the menu above just aborts saying I have no debugger available. I'm a programmer, I know C# somewhat, .NET not much.

Oh, nevermind, after having upgraded with some new hardware and reinstalling XP, everything now works again!

This is not very important, but a funny misprint. In the online CivAssist II help, section named "Trade Options View", it says:

Dark red means that enemy at war is willing to talk and you could possibly trade if you sing a peace treate.

This is a new aspect of Civ. Presumably, the better you can sing, the better deals you get? Maybe a real treat? lol

(sing -> sign, treate -> treaty)

wow, civassist 2 is so awesome.

my average time played for one game will at least double, if not triple!!!

:goodjob:

Does CivAssist II alter the save file at all? I'm having a weird crash when contacting Egypt in two recent games. I have no reason to suspect CivAssist II other than being aware it touches the save file between turns, but I thought I'd ask as I don't know what else to check.

I apparently have been running 2.0.1982 and will now update to the latest version.

No - it doesn't modify the save files.

I would try a reinstall & repatching of Civ - you may have a graphics file corrupted, which would cause a crash.

Good to know, thanks. I'll try the reinstall...what you just said made me realize that the crash may be correlated to Cleo entering the middle ages which would be consistent with a graphics error.

Thanks, and thanks for an indispensable utility in CivAssist and CivAssist II!

EDIT: Reinstalling fixed my problem. It had nothing to do with CivAssist II but was presumably a corrupt Egypt animated middle ages leaderhead. Thanks!

I have both Complete and CivAssistII and there are no compatibility problems. :)

@Ainwood: Are you still support CAII? I have a misspicture report.

C3C complete, COTM31.

CAII world map shows two marsh tiles as grassland, but the 'Details' section identifies correctly. IIRC the E, NE marsh ones, at that moment unexplored, are shown Ok. (also the marsh tiles in the West side are shown Ok.)

Not a big problem, just little annoyed when I tried to place my planned cities.

Anyway, great job :goodjob:!

Also I post the save.

Ainwood, absolutely wonderful program overflowing with detail. In fact, I'm still overwhelmed and can't understand exactly what all of it means. Maybe someone can write a comprehensive user's manual, though such a manual may wind up being a larger file than the program itself.

If you're still planning to update CivAssist II, I have a few suggestions:

1) Add an alert that indicates cities that have a high probability of culture flipping.

2) Make the "Shield Forest" indicators on the World Map page more visible relative to the improvements or have the "Improvements" toggle leave the cities in place while getting rid of the other improvements for orientation purposes.

3) On the Territory page add an estimate of the date that current cultural boundary settings will expand beyond the domination limit. This would be similar to the estimate of cultural victory date in that it only accounts for current culture counts and city placements.

I also have a question, now that I am talking to a programmer. The reason that I looked into CivAssist II in the first place is that I was looking for something that basically does what "Shield Forest" does indeed do. Unfortunately, I am running a machine w/o adequate memory to run CivAssist with the game feasibly. Is it possible to modify the game to have a "Shield Forest" function in the game itself? Or is this something that is "hard-coded" and can't be accessed by anyone but the game programmers?

Again, thank you for creating such a useful tool.:goodjob:

Asking the same question on more than one thread is something which is frowned on around here...

Anyway, the answer is no, you can't modify the game. That's why CAII is a separate utility while similar things in Civ4 are integrated. Oh, and get yourself the necessary memory. What does a 512 Meg stick cost for an old computer these days. 30-40 bucks?

Just a quick question, here:

Usually I can click on the CivAssist II icon on the top left side of the screen whenever I'm in the middle of a game. However, sometimes...I click it, and it just turns blue. The Civ III sounds stop, so I know it's trying to open CA II, but it never opens: the button stays blue, and I have to push ctrl+alt+delete to open the task manager and activate CA II that way. So, now for my question: is this just caused by my machine (it's limits): do I just have to deal with it? or, can this be remedied somehow ???

I suspect it is because the ssytem/game is busy. You see this when you try to bring up CA and have just saved teh game on a huge or larger map. Also if the game is on the IBT.

I've been using CivAssist II for a while now, it's a great tool. But I'm having OS compatability problems with it.

I used CivAssist II on a Windows XP SP2 computer with no problems. I recently formatted my hard drive and installed Windows Vista Ultimate (wow, amazing OS), and I can't install CivAssist II because it can't detect the .NET Framework 1.1. So I went to the Microsoft Download page, and downloaded the .NET 1.1 installer, and whatta you know, I can't install the old .NET 1.1 package. Windows says that an error occurs because it's already either installed, or its out of date (Vista uses .NET 3.0). Windows update doesn't show .NET 1.1 or .NET 2.0 for download either.

So my question is, does anyone know how to get around this? Is there any way of installing CivAssist II on a computer running Vista Ultimate, or is anyone making a new release of the tool for Vista? Am I doing something wrong, has someone managed to get it working? Please help!

EDIT: Never mind, I figured out how to get it to work.

Vista comes with .NET 3.0 which has .NET 2.0 built in, but it's missing .NET 1.1. You need to download the .NET Framework 1.1 package from Microsoft and install it - the trick to getting it to install properly after downloading is to right click on the .exe, and select "Run as administrator." If you just double click on the file it will give you an error, so running as administrator is necessary for it to install properly. If it doesn't work, restart the computer and try again (it's what I did, worked for me). .NET 1.1 will install itself, and now you can run CivAssist II on Windows Vista!

Hi All,

Just did a major PC upgrade jumped from Win98 to a Vista machine. Love how CivIII runs on it but I'm having issues with Civassist (how did we ever play without it?!)

With vista are folks loading both the .Net version 1.xx & the service pack?? I'm getting similar issues to bloh & Niklas

Thanks for any help...
