CivAssist II

CivAssist II 30-Oct-2016

Your save folder should be visible in the first place. Where is your save folder located when you see it through the game? Is it somewhere under My Documents, or is it under the game directory? It could be that your system flagged the save folder as a hidden folder for whatever reason it had. You could change you settings to see folders automatically hidden by Windows. Go to My Computer, then Tools on the menu bar, Folder Options, under the View tab there's a list of things you can change. Vista comes with "Do not show hidden files and folders" by default under "Hidden files and folders", you could change it to "Show hidden files and folders". I don't know if that would make any difference though, especially if you are running multiple accounts.

Another thing you could try is whenever you install anything, change the settings so that it installs with permissions to be used by everyone on the computer.

I can't think of anything else. I run my system with only 1 user which automatically makes me the administrator, so I don't have to worry about permissions and hidden folders and such. It could be that if you installed Civ3 as one user, you cannot see those saves if you log on as another user.

The "Show Hidden" option did not work, but while I was poking around the folder options I noticed a menu item in the Conquests folder called "Compatibility Files". Clicking on that item revealed the save folder. Doing a google search I learned that the game is expecting the save files to be in a certain location, but since that location does not exist in Vista, Vista does some magic to convince the program that the files are where they are expected, but actually stores them under "AppData" in your user area; actually several folders deep under "AppData". Wow.

Macezek, thank you for your help.

I BET you that the only reason Vista is doing that is because you have multiple users and/or you have UAC enabled (do you?). Because of those, Civ3 might not have installed properly, so Vista auto-corrects everything to make it seem like everything is fine to the user. Not very helpful when you are a power user or someone who works with computers a lot. You have to take into account that when Microsoft came up with Vista they wanted to make the OS as idiot proof as possible, which means that Vista does things automatically that we don't want it to do.

Should I install this in Vista under compatibility mode to get it to work properly? And if so what system? (XP sp2 or Windows 2000?)

I don't think you need to do that, though if you want, make it for XP SP2. Windows 2000 is pretty old. You can always change the compatability mode options on the files later under their properties.

I got problem with installing this thingy...
My civ III is in "c://games/Civilization III" folder
I am running windoza xp.
I tried to reinstall and repair, but that did not help, and I am too lazy to check all the pages (currently 41 pages) of civ assist posts.

This is picture of what happens if I do try to run civ assist, if I repair it also throws weird error, I can get screenshot of that too, if that would be any use.

Thank you for your (possible) help.

its not service pack but there are 1.1 .net framework and hotfix, when I tried to download framework from links you gave, my comp did not allow me to install new framework...

I got the me error as northern wolf.

I trunning Vista with .Net 3.0 and I installed .Net 1.1 too.

But CIV Assist still shows an error screen, when starting.

Are there any ideas. how to solve this problem, as it is serously limiting me in my sgotm.

Have you searched through this thread for any possible solutions? I run Vista, errors like this are usually caused by a combination of multiple user acounts with UAC and improper permissions settings. Can't help you much with XP, strange you're getting that error since XP shouldn't have any issues with it.

I am using only one account, called 'Kodu'. I am using xp on laptop... My civ 3 is located in folder "C:\Games\Civilization III"... I have full permission to my computer and I am not running anyother OS besides one xp OS...

Wow. That's exactly like I had my game running before upgrading to Vista, and I had no problems at all.

I have the exact same on my PC (1.1, Hotfix, 2.0, 3.0(not sure how/why that's there but whatever...)). WinXP Pro SP2, full admin rights.

Try repairing each of the installations in turn (though you probably just need to repair 1.1 as I believe that's what CA2 requires):

Try going into the Windows compatibility wizard and set CivAssist II to run as an XP or 2000 program. Seems to have worked for me.

EDIT: Nope, doesn't work. CA II running as an XP program doesn't recognize Civ running in Vista. Grrr.

My computer slows to a crawl runing CivAssist 2 and Civ. Anyone still use CivAssist 1.12? Is it less of a performance drain than CA2? Is it a help?
I can use CA2 alone, before I start playing, but that doesn't help so much.
Thanks!

Splunge:

Is your pc old and slow? Mine is old and slow (Pentium 3), but Civ and CivAssist 2 runs OK. I never tried the older version of CA.

How much is running in the background on your pc? Try and shut down things you don't need. Perhaps alot of programs you don't need is running as auto startup.

I've just bought a laptop with Vista (which is a pain) and am having similar troubles to you all. I've finally got CivAssist working by running it as Administartor etc. However there's another problem. CivAssist watches for saves in the usual place. But Vista with its wonders of file virtualization actually redirects the saves to another place under your account settings. And CivAssist doesn't seem to detect the new saves to pop up the alerts etc.

VERY ANNOYING!

It's a P4 1.7gHz with 1 gig RAM. I have some stuff in background, but not dreadful, I don't think. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. At the risk of sounding dumb, what's the right way to start playing while running CA2?
