Maybe it's time to think about our civics, as we might be able to get a whole lot of new civics within the next few turns.

info on civics

Governement:
Despotism or Hereditary Rule, currently HR, and probably the best because of happiness reasons.

Legal:
currently Barbarism, we can change it to Vassalage or Bureaucracy.

Labor:
Currently Slavery, but some of use don't want to use slaves because it's unethical. We could change it to Serfdom (extra worker speed and low upkeep) or Caste System (We can run more specialists, but the upkeep is medium).

Economy: no change possible

Religion: We don't have a religion yet, so paganism is the most usefull as it's only low upkeep.

Firstly unless you have representation, I dont like caste system much.

Secondly serfodm is a lot different from slavery, as it puts value on the serfs life and offers protection and limited rights. I wont get into that, though.

Bueracracy is always my most favored civic. And serfdom sounds pretty good.

Serfdom does sound good. We still have a lot of improvements to make around the cities. There was talk of whipping the rest of the army together, tho, which of course needs slavery. The beauty here is that it is not hard to switch between them. Bureaucracy is a no brainer.

Serfdom...but if we declare war back to slavery if or when we need to whip.

Bureaucracy is a must.

I'd say serfdom+ bureaucracy.

What are the benefits of the different choices? In other words, how would switching help US in our current situation?

switch to Vasselage (no anarchy). We get extra experience points. It will cost us 6 gold per turn, but vasselage gives us 12 free units. I assume this will reduce the 16 gold we are currently paying for units (does it reduce it by 12?)
It won't reduce the gold by 12 for unit upkeeps, but the overall effect on our economy will actually gain us 2 gpt. The new units we do build will gain 2 experience points per turn.

Serfdom will not change our economy, but it will increase the speed of all 11 of our workers.

Bureaucracy will increase BW's hammers and commerce by 50%. It is also a more expensive civic. I can't see what the exact effects are yet, since we don't have the tech for it. BW has 12 hammers and 34 commerce, so it should give +6 hammers, +9 beakers, and +15 gold. I believe it will only cost 2gpt in civic costs, so it will increase our net national gpt.

I think Serfdom is a slam dunk. Bur. will give us more hammers, science, and gold, but Vass. will give us more experience. I thinkit's clear we need to change this civic, it's just a question of which one to get. (assuming we trade for Civil Service tech)

Vassalage might actually be worth it if we want to go Gerry-killing sometime soon.

GeorgeOP has already quoted from my post in the Triumvirate thread, but I think it is worth repeating a few things here.

I think we need to decide if we want to attack Berlin. When we got the ceasefire (or peace treaty, whichever) a lot of people were in favour of attacking. Although it was a while ago in RL time, that was not very many turns ago (about 7).

If we still want to do this, then I think we go with Vassalage (for experience points) and Slavery (for whipping units/buildings) now. Get our force built up quick before Germany pulls away from us again on the Power graph and attack. When we attack we can switch to Serfdom/whatever - we won't need it. I suspect if the attack fails after 10/15 turns of building units then a switch to slavery once we are losing won't help.

If we go with Serfdom now to help build improvements then we will go backwards against Germany power-wise and will make the attack a lot harder. A last minute switch to slavery will not fix that.

So: if we want war, then I recommend Slavery & Vassalage. If we want long-term peace, then go for Serfdom.

according to my information, we should have had a poll up long ago to make this civic change this TC, correct?

I posted some polls, mainly because I don't want another 1 turn TC because the DP can't change to the best civics available. I hope I did it right.
