Hey folks,

Been playing this game all week on CivIII (vanilla). I just built the space ship and when the screen comes up to launch it, I click the launch button, then it makes a funny noise (maybe the beginning of the space-ship movie? Is there a movie? Been a long time since I did this...) and then the game just closes up! I'm staring at my desktop scratching my head. No error message, nothing. I have tried rebooting and changing the display resolution to match those used by the game, I don't know! I've never had this problem before.

Sincerely,
Gameless in NY...

I think this is caused by the space flight movie not playing correctly (as you elude to).

You can find the intro movie (not sure what the name is), and copy it. Rename the copy to whatever the space race movie is called. Now, when the space race movie plays you get the intro one, but at least it shouldn't crash.

I think the gods are telling me I've been playing too much.... I couldn't figure out which movie file it was, or how to switch it, etc. So I just backed up my saves folder and tried to reinstall .... So now when the game loads, I get the intro movie and the opening menu screen.... BUT NO MENU! No text, no buttons, nothing. I have tried reinstalling, uninstalling and installing, installing the patch, all this multiple times, and still the same problem... It should be noted that my home-made computer has other issues, thought things have been running relatively smoothly lately, so perhaps this is not a problem with Civ at all, but I'm stumped as to what to do now, except to sleep on it and try reinstalling again in the morning.

Any advice is welcome.

Did you remember to make the sacrifice to Sid, in order for a clean install?

No, seriously, uninstall, and then clean the registry. You can find out how to do that here. (link fixed)

Okay cool, you're advice worked as far as getting the game working again. Thank you. But now when I try to load my old saves I get the message "not a valid save file"?????

Any advice?

Thanks.

Some more details: I can create new saved files and they work fine. I tried loading the scenario of Marla Singer's world map from my old scenerio's folder and that also didn't work. Got the message "file may be corrupted" Nooooooooo.... What can I do without my precious saves!!!

Is this the end of my glorious civ game? It was going so beautifully!

::smacks head:: When I was trying to fix it the first time I tried applying the patch, so when I manually reinstalled it I forgot to do this again. Thanks for the clue. Space victory achieved at last!!!
