Civilization 4: "Sid meier's civilization 4 has stopped working"

Hi all,

I am running Windows Vista and cannot get Civilization to lode. I have spent 4 hours installing and uninstalling with tech support (Downloaded all recent updates) and still cant get it to work. Has anyone else had this issue happen to them?

HELP!!!! thanks.

I am getting that quite often now... usually I can't go 10 turns without getting that. All it tells me is that it stops working. I am on a newer 64 bit Vista machine, which I am guessing may be the problem, but it never did this on my older machine.

Anyone have an answer for this? I don't get any error messages just it's stopped working. It seems to be happening more and more now on vanilla and on mods....

Well friends, I went through the same thing these last few days trying to get Civ IV vanilla to work on my Vista32 machine. I would have never thought that my video card was the culprit (it is more fun to cuss out Mickysoft ;) ). But, a friend let me borrow his video card since it is the same model as what I have. I swapped out the video card and the game ran flawlessly. The player was stupid as hell, but the game ran fine.

Now I'm waiting for a new card I ordered off the internet, a BFG 7300GT 512 MB AGP.

I was not having any problems at all and thought all was good until I tried to install Civ IV. I never figured that a game could put such a heavy load on a video card as Civ does. Go figger dat one!

BTW, there are some excellant tips on uninstalling the game and add-ons in the "Civililzation and Windows Vista" topic.

I installed the nVidia card and Vista kept chugging along like nothing happened, no problems and no worries.

CIV IV works great! The game loads, and does it's thing as advertised. Changing out the video card was all that was needed. I guess I got lucky and stumbled upon that solution. Now, if I can only figger out how to play the dang game! ;)

All,

I have been having the same problem. I can usually get about 120 turns into the game, then it crashes. It doesn't matter if I am playing CIV 4, Warlords, or BTS. It also happens in modded games. Following is the error message from the event viewer.

Description:
Faulting application Civ4Warlords.exe, version 2.1.3.0, time stamp 0x464b927a, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x00000000, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00000001, process id 0x1560, application start time 0x01c8e745d0c27f59.

If this is a video card issue, I am probably in trouble. I have tried to update the card driver, but it can only be done through the Sony site, and they say I have the most current driver. (What came with the machine.) Any advice, anyone?

Thanks,

Boomer

Ori,

I did a memory diagnostic and everything came back fine. Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Boomer

it certainly is a memory access problem.
Any number of things can do this, e.g.
faulty RAM (just for your information: whatever utility you use - its worthless - any utility that claims it can check 3GB of RAM within 2 hours is lying - if you ever want to test your memory try something like memtest86 and let it run overnight).
faulty graphics memory
bad software (both the game as well as the drivers - mostly graphics drivers) - this is not a known issue of the game as far as I am aware
malware that restricts access to certain memory addresses
anti-malware that restricts access to certain memory addresses :crazyeye:
so it is extremely difficult to troubleshoot...
does the eventviewer have any other errors associated with this?

This is my desktop:
HP Pavilion a6421.uk
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.30GHz
3070 MB RAM
Windows Vista

I installed Civilization 4 but when I went to play the game it came up with “this program has known compatibility issues with this version of Windows” and wouldn’t run so I changed the compatibility mode to windows XP SP2 and checked the “do not display this message again” box and tried running the game and it says “cannot locate CD ROM (even though it’s a DVD) i even installed firaxis' Civilization IV v1.74 Patch which changes nothing- why is this happening? I haven’t downloaded anything or changed any files in the game folder so why suddenly can it not locate the CD? And how can I get the game working ?
