Civilization 5 Steamworks questions/concerns for inclusion in the FAQ

actually they sound like they are looking at all software installed or at least all software running concurrently with Steam (which since Steam by default is always running is essentially the same).

(note: in that interview they are talking about Steam stability and their crash numbers - that data likely refers to crash report data)

Ah, yes. Almost certainly the process list is reported as well. Interesting.

I'll send an e-mail to privacy@valvesoftware.com and see if they can give us a specific idea about the kinds of info they collect. :)

Seems like some people really like flipping out over the FAQ not being out yet.

2K_Greg said "certainly by the end of June" and that the estimate was conservative i.e. he expected the FAQ to be finished before then. I fail to see what your problem is with people chasing him on the subject.

Whilst a fair proportion of the FAQ is likely to be about Steam I would like to point out that the FAQ was supposed to cover a number of other important subjects like modding and whether or not it was possible to multiple versions of Civ at different patch levels.

Agreed. IMO, his credibility is diminishing. If I tell a customer I will have a product by a certain date, I better have said product ready on the date in question. It's a real good reason to start losing customers.

Now, I'm quite willing to give the gentleman the benefit of the doubt ( although to be honest, I was expecting this given previous failures from 2k's reps) and see if he's willing to revise his ETA for the FAQ.

So Greg, do you have a revised sched? :sarcasm: or should we start investing in a OBA for the eventual smoke?

*note: OBA is a military term for an Oxygen Breathing Apparatus

No, I'm not going to give another date. I've learned my lesson!

No, I'm not going to give another date. I've learned my lesson!
Can you please tell us why you can't post the answers to those questions you do have answers for instead of waiting until, presumably, you have answers to all the questions?

Off Topic, and with :sarcasm: IMO, the same reasons previously given by 2k's stellar crew. They want to make sure all available inquiries will be satisfactorally given the appropriate answer it deserves. Not to mention that they want to make sure we're all happy, after all, we're vitally important to them, as proven by the copius amounts corp love genuflected on our happy little family forum... Oh, wait, was that out loud? terrably sorry.

What I meant to say was that the 2k PTB's are hard at work right now solving the very questions you so desparately desire to have answers for, because accordind to all the information gleaned from all over the web, 2k has our best interests at heart... Hmnn, that doesn't sound right either.

Because we have to wait until 2k has sufficiant time to respond to our questions... yeah, there ya go, that's the correct answer..

OT: ok Greg, here's a valid question. Will we get a comprehensive FAQ within the next 30 days detailing ALL pertenant questions that have been previously stated? Note: By comprehensive, I don't mean any PR glitz and glitter, but actual detailed answers. Or, is your estimation of said FAQ going to be closer to the release date of Civ V, thereby making the FAQ pretty much pointless and a complete waste of our time?

I think some of the questions users asked made the dev team think twice, and perhaps they are retooling civ v/steam intergration. I'm not at all saying they maybe getting rid of it, more so that they are fixing possible problems they either didn't think of, or didn't realize would be so important. If that's the case maybe question A with answer B is now question A with answer C. Hopefully something good will come of this FAQ. Otherwise, regardless of E3, 56 people or so on the dev team, and many more on valves side, should have been able to answer most of these questions, beyond the vague answers I suspect we will recieve on the more indetail questions users have asked, ie what exact information does steam collect.

Ok, fair enough. So what's wrong with a polite " hey folks, some of your questions proved invaluable to us, and we're implementing a few changes". Or how about " we've run into a minor snafu due to a potential error brought to our attention by you wonderful loyal fans, and we're fixing those as we speak, so the FAQ will be briefly delayed"..( Greg, are you taking notes? :) ).

I'm not trying to be arbitrairy here ( oh, wait, maybe I am), but i'm from the generation of " when a man gives his word, he keeps it". Those of you who laugh, sneer, think it's outdated, are more than welcome to do so. No harm, no foul, your opinions. But that archaic, tired cliche does have merit in today's business practices. Your a rep for a company, you've (and your boss to some extent) put your "word" out to your customers that things will happen by a specific time frame, and you've failed to keep it. Guess what, your reputation diminishes, customers no longer trust you, and overall your "word" means absolutely nothing.
So what you say. They're a multi-million dollar corp. What's one ranting ( not really, but humor me while I wax philisophical) old guy compared to that? In the end result, probably nothing. But then again, my interactions with friends and family will be colored by that experiance. Word of mouth spreads quickly between friends and family, and while archaic or old fashioned in today's electronic age, that may actually be the the tipping scale between a huge block buster or just another decent strategy game.

Don't get me wrong, I think Gregs put his, and 2ks, credibility at question. Maybe a week before the end of June he could have said, "sorry guys Ill need more time", instead of waiting till that day basicly. I think your right, Drakarska, and don't take my above post as a reply to yours, it wasn't meant to be. I was just wishfully thinking out loud :).

he did essentially say that he wouldn't make it a week before ;)

It'll be released here, in a new thread. It'll probably also go on the official webpage.

Whether or not it'll make my "end if June" estimate is... well, we'll just have to see

He clearly knew he wouldn't, instead he danced around it.

Agreed. A previous statement by him clearly intematted that he would have no problem getting a FAQ to us by the end of June. I suppose I could search thru the various threads to locate it, but what would be the point?

BTW Greg, you and yours have a happy Independance day.

The silence from 2K is deafening..............oh well, for me, it is like watching a countdown clock, every day of ignoring the valid questions means (to me) less trust in the truth of the answers when (if) they ever do get posted. Soon it will be at zero, and I won't care if the questions get answered at all.

I know what they're [Valve/steam] taking. :)
With all respect - no you don't.

Your own post shows you don't know. For example you quote Valve's privacy policy where it states "Personally identifiable information" consists of a user's name, email address, physical address, or other data about the user that enables the recipient to personally identify the user." [emphasis mine]

Unless by knowing what they collect you mean 'I know they collect something but not what'?

Similarly you don't know what all aggregate and individual info they collect. You don't know if or to what extent they collate the aggregate, individual, and personally identifiable info.

You know some of it -- the innocuous stuff that most don't object to.

If what valve collects is so innocuous then why is it so hard to get the answer to these simple questions:
-what personally identifiable information do they collect?
-who is is shared with?
-what purpose(s) is it put to?

More importantly, why does anybody care what data Steam collects on you, ^>^.
I mean honhestly, what do you have that is so important that it needs be kept private other than your credit card number which I can near enough gaurentee Steam isn't giving to anyone.

Not really the point though, is it. Point was asking valid questions from the 2k reps, and getting an equally valid answer. As for the "why does anyone care", obviously those of us who wish a legitimate answer to our questions. Hence the reason for the FAQ in the first place.

No, I'm not going to give another date. I've learned my lesson!

Release what you have now, it's better then nothing. When you have more answers you can just update the faq.

Also still waiting an answer on the deluxe edition disappearing from the pre-order options for a while.
