civilization 6..... US vs China

If the real word was a really feature rich Civilization game, lets say Civ 6 :D

And we had gotten through to turn 2012 and we had a player as the US and a player as China, which player would you rather be?

I was discussing this the other day and it feels like in maybe 10 or 20 turns from now China would be the dominant player in the game, almost like they are biding their time and massing up there resources while playing the diplomacy game.

The US player is busy dealing with Civil Disorder in their towns and unhappy citizens from troops being away, might have more units fortified and more dominant units, but distracted by being on a technology/research game.

I would love to see the outcome of this game. how would you handle grand strategy and moving units across the pacific ocean?

To answer the first question: the U.S. At least if we're looking at this from a balance of power perspective. If we're looking at a score based on land area and population, the U.S. clearly isn't going to catch China anytime soon.

So, why? A few reasons:
- The Navy. China just bought its first aircraft carrier from Ukraine. I'm not sure how many aircraft carriers the U.S. has, but it's a lot more than one. Add in the non-aircraft-carrier ship advantage, and it's very significant. It's really no contest on the Pacific. And while that may even out somewhat in the next 10-20 years, I think the U.S. will be aware that its naval advantage is a significant asset and won't let it fall behind in that time. Longer term it could happen simply due to population and resources, but not that quickly.
- Civil disorder could go either way. Yes, there's a lot of Americans who are unhappy with their government, and it's no wonder given the path it's taken in the 21st century. But it's far from clear that China won't have significant civil unrest in the next 20 years, either. If the Chinese economic growth slows or stops, all bets are off, and the Communist Party knows this. That's why they've been so dedicated to keeping the growth going - the question is, can they maintain that long enough that the eventual lull isn't too big?
- I would question whether the U.S. has a focus on technology now. Yes, the U.S. is amongst the tops in military technology, and leads some other areas, too, but the U.S. hasn't been tops in education for quite awhile. I don't expect China (on average, across its populace) to top the U.S. in 20 years, but I don't expect the U.S. to move upwards in the next 20 years, either. However, if the U.S. were to put a focus on technology, I think that would be a good thing. It's excessive Neville Chamberlainism that's the hazard.

China's population has stopped growing and is about to decline rapidly. This is and always will be the American Century ;)

America has far better land; China is stuck with a lot of desert, plains, and mountains. Not much grassland or floodplains. Decent hills though for production.

Water would be more of a problem for China than the US. China depends a lot on the Himalayan glaciers, which are melting because of global warming. The problem of a future water crisis also exist in the US, especially the Southwest were aquifers are being depleted. The US could more easily develop technology to address it and we have fewer people to supply. That is so long as we keep from polluting our water sources by banning Fracking for natural gas.

China has plenty of floodplains (Yellow River, Yangtze River, etc.), plus it has the Three Gorges Dam which helps it a lot.

The USA has useless cities in desert as well, as well as in tundra and even an island city which is really far away from the capital - The USA doesn't even have a Forbidden Palace!

 Please. This isn't even a contest.

The United States, hands down. Why? One reason, and one reason only: TECHNOLOGY. Civ, Master of Orion, Sins, the Total War series, GalCiv, Supreme Commander. In almost all strategy games, including real life, modern technology trumps all other factors.
