Civilization Fanatics' Chess Tournament Cross Table

I had that exact thing in a game at Apolyton. It wasn't my opponents fault so I just had to live with it.You do have to be careful...its quite an easy thing to do,I know.I can safely say,it has never happened again...yet....so I did learn something valuable.

I should add it can be most helpful to post a diagram of the game periodically. Then your opponent can see exactly what you see and descrepancies can be corrected before too long.

thats a happy solution :D

For the record

Rain - Smash 1/2 - 1/2

Don't forget to post your results in the "Player's Records" thread.

I'm down for any future tournaments you guys have! How do you organize the games? Personally if I'm gonna play eight people, I'd rather play a 60 minute game on FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) or Yahoo than go back and forth with 8 people, that would seem to take forever.

If its not a correspondance tourny than count me in for the future!

Well it didn't really work so we probably wont be doing another tournament, unless we do a knockout tournament instead.

Hi all!

I think that not knockout, but some Swiss (lose two parties to different players & go away) with some time limit (1 day for move from last opponent move message) with Blitz rule - miss your time & lose.
Other idea: round tournament where all play with all simultaneously. For example: if we have 8 participitant then each white playing person must make his moves in 7 parties each even day with black response in odd day (we will count by Greenwich time). Miss your move - lose your party. It will begins as 28 parties altogether, but couple of players would eliminate yourself, by don't get in time with their response in first week. Then this process will be more manageable. Couple of months & main part of tournament would be finished with couple of guys making their struggle slightly longer then other. (Smash & other moderators would have some handicup here due to their everyday presence, but if you want to play really hard, other players can overcome this problem ;).) If you want - we can overcome some "unfairness" of white colour by playing both - white & black with your opponent simultaneously. It means that we will have 56 different parties & 56 different treads simultaneously. (But something whispers to me that with "time limit" for response we will get something around 20-30 parties after first week.
You want to say that you can't make only one move in a day in 7 or 14 parties simultaneously? Are you sure that we speak about the same game? Chess game? ;)

Sincerely yours, Alex.

Not everyone can get online everyday, and people can be banned etc so you cannot have daily deadlines.

Alex,
if you're keen to play that style try this site: http://www.stansco.com/cgi-bin/nc_ppp.cgi?6346
It is friendly and well organized for lots of types of tournament. If some of us wanted to play together in a tournament format, that would a good place to host it.
I like playing "friendlies" here, but it is not a good format for large numbers of games or for disciplined playing times.

another internet correspondence site is RedHotPawn

Live play has just been added and its still free.

Thats an excellent one also :goodjob:

I gave up very quickly on redhotpawn. People were rude and ignorant and the only opponents I could get to were very poor players. I got the impression that decent (inboth senses) players were hiding from newcomers, perhaps becuase there was so much garbage going on. The people running the site seemed helpless at the time.

If you think things have been improved I might try again. But the best I know in the UK is http://207.21.204.129/chessclubs/asplogin.asp

which used to be Barnet Chess club's site. Just had a look and it has changed so I don't know whether it is still okay.

Other decent sites (with their own character, and sometimes problems, are http://207.21.204.129/chessclubs/asplogin.asp
and http://www.playchess.de/playchess.cgi

Between those sites I have played a couple of hundred games and even more at Stans.

For me, Stan's is easily the bestbut I got good competitive chess at Netchess. Both of these are free. Playchess used to be free. I subscribe at Stan's for the extras, but the free service is brilliant. I would subscribe at Playchess (which I like also very much) but last I checked the only alternative to paypal had surcharges on it.

Just as an aside, I often cite Stan's as an example of excellent web design from which some of my colleagues (and a host of so-called web-designers everywhere) could learn.

I think I am starting to agree with you about RHP.There is a "clique" that is too busy calling people cheaters and patting each other on the back as their "ratings" climb to play good chess. You definitely are not welcomed with open arms.I kinda like it though. The struggle against the ruling class in not new to me

.Especially in chess!

I only signed on awhile ago but I have had some good games. They have had a surge of new members so it isn't neccessary to be one of the "in" crowd to get a good game anymore.

This tourney is dead.No need for a sticky anymore :(

I signed up at Stan's for the subscriber free trial just to have a looksy and, while I can't say anything about the play, the site is excellent.I see why you use it as an example.Whoever made that is on the ball :goodjob:

Great! I've thrown down the gauntlet. I would guess there are probably a couple of dozen active players who can give you a real tough time there. There's well over fifty that give me a tough game Pluto is also Canadian by the way and at least half a dozen I'd be very lucky to draw with once in ten.

Long before Stan set up his automated tournament stuff there were groups used to organize tourneys on their own sites and have the games played at Stan's.

The story behind the site is as follows:

At the time of the Fischer-Spassky match, Stan was one of the thousands across the world that got hooked on chess. He and his cousin (they were just young lads then) bought a set and started to play. Because they couldn't meet too often they took to playing each other by phone.

Years later when the internet came about, they had the idea of reviving that time and Stan (I suspect he works in IT anyway) set up a system for them to play that way. And it grew.....

Stan is a great enthusiast and this seems to rub off on the site. In my experience the vast majority of players there are friendly and things that flare up get calmed down much easier than other places I go to. One amazing (to me, but really I probably mean wonderful) thing is that Stan does not appear to ever have played at any organized level otb or correspondence and so has never become an expert of any kind.

Another amazing thing is how much he listens to suggestions to enhance the site and how well, and quickly, he implements them.

By the way ignore my current rating there, because I was out of it for a couple of months and forfeited a lot of games. Previously I was somewhere around the 2200 mark and rising.
