The discussion about Civ on a globe is not new and comes back every year ... especially since Civ5/Civ6 use Hex tiles ...

Today I saw on STEAM the videos/pictures of Early Access to "Imagine Earth" (http://store.steampowered.com/app/280720/?snr=1_5_9__300 ) ... and it looks very promising ... I think they use triangular tiles instead of hexes / pentagons ... So far we haven't heard anything about "Civ6 on a globe" ...

You should check out Civ 4 if you want to play on a globe :)

I have played Civ4 for years ... the globe there is a fake feature ... North and South Pole are not part of the map ... the normal rectangular map is just wrapped around the "equator" of a globe with small distortion ... but it is still a flat rectangular map.

The image looked good until I read this. Now I can only see all the forests that look like triangles, and it really destroys the aesthetic for me. :D

But I still don't see any gameplay coming from "Civ on a globe". It's just a gimmick in my eyes, one that causes tons of problems.

The image looks good, but you should check gameplay on youtube. The ingame graphics dont seem as good.

IDK, but if it is possible to make a good 3D globe, keeping the strategy of tiles in one way or another, I'd like to play on a globe. Guess they would need a lot more time to set that up right, and balance it and everything, not coming any time soon for Civ

To avoid misunderstandings :

With "Civilization on a Globe" I refer to our Civilization series transfering to a Globe as it is regularely discussed ... it is not meant to describe "Imagine Earth" gameplay. I have not played "Imagine Earth" so far, but there is a demo for those interested.

I linked the pictures/links for "Imagine Earth" as visualization and to show that a globe in times of 3D-graphics is no longer a big problem. As far as I know the small and young team behind "Imagine Earth" started as a group of computer sciences students or so ...

Triangles, Hexes and Pentagons are all connected on a globe. You can divide a Sphere into 12 Pentagons (Dodecahedron) or into 20 Triangules (Icosahedron). You can divide a Hex into 6 Triangules, a Pentagon into 5 Triangules. If you take a Triangule and divide it into 9 smaller Triangules, the inner 6 of them can form a new Hex ... (The minor problem with Hexagons/Pentagons on a sphere arises at the 12 corner-points of the basic icosahedron/dodecahedron which are shared by only 5 Triangules while all other corner-points are shared by 6 Triangules.)
