What would be your ultimate computer for playing all the Civ games? I'm sick of how slow mine is. Also, sorry about the "Garden Universe" post, I wasn't sure about the rules here and it is non commercial/helping a friend oriented but hey, its your forum and I'll respect the rules.

Welcome to CFC Frank. I would prefer a computer that is faster than what I currently have even though I can run civ 4 just fine.

Mine plays Civ just fine. It's a 3.01 GHz HT enabled Pentium 4 with 512 MB ram (dual channel), radeon 9550 card..etc. If there was one thing I would change is upping my ram to 2 GB. A nice big LCD screen too. I got an LCD HDTV but it is not desgned for puter use but damn I wish it was.

It's floating haphazardly in an uncontrolled orbit around Jupiter.

You are welcomed to put that link in your signature. However. I think this thread is just more of a spammy thread at the moment.

Now to steal the space shuttle. . . It will be mine, I want to have meaningless conversations with it till it tries to kill me.

Fyi: I got an athlon and an Intel. Dual-core 4.4 gig athlon is marvelous, but my HT 3.2 gig intel isn't bad either. Whatever you choose make sure you have at least 1 gig of ram, no less or you will be spending more on it in short order.

One of these days I'll get all the right components. I have an LCD at least, but everything else is sloooow. Civ 4 just gets slower and slower on my PC until it stops, freezes and that's it. Very frustrating.

Definately not a 1.8 GHz, 256 MB RAM, nVIDIA GeForce 2 MX 400 computer like mine... :(

Barring all those fancy processors and stuff these days, I would just go with something like 2 GB RAM (although, to quote Speedo, the performance differences compared to 1 gig are "<5 %") and a video card with at least 256 MB. I would assume a card like the nVIDIA 7800GT(X?) works well...of course you could always have 2 of them (SLI). I don't know much about processors, so can't help you there, sorry. Those three things are probably the most important factors.

Well having a fast Raptor would help with loading times. I think having as fast CPU as possible would help the most, if graphics are good enough - over some point graphics won't help you much.

A computer with an AM2 Socket and any compatible processor, as well as a mobo that supports SLI and a Nvidia 7xxx series video card or higher that can run in SLI. 1.5 gigs of Ram is the most you will prob need unless you decide to run civ 4 and something else at the same time.
The AM2 socket will allow further processor upgrades and the SLi will allow you to put in a second video card if the one you use is losing its edge. ! gig of ram can be somewhat little, but 1.5 is fine for almost anything.

Overall I'm happy with my system. I don't have Civ4 in particular, but it runs pretty much everything else smoothly with enough eye candy. Really, Oblivion is about the only game that pushes it to the limit.

and a video card with at least 256 MB.

Honestly if you're looking for a higher-end system, or a system that will have a bit more longevity, you should go for a 512MB card. We're already hitting the point where games really need 512MB to run the highest detail. Oblivion is a particular case, especially if you run some of the improved texture packs. (on a 256MB card, you get stuttering as textures are swapped between GPU and system memory).

Yes, that's what I was thinking about, but the whole purpose of the thread was a computer for Civ4, so that's why I just went with 256 MB. If creating a system for a few years and more intensive games, yeah, I agree.
