Civilization Trivia

Ahhhhh.....

I like it!!!

Everyone Download 1.1!!!

I looked over the code....very impressive!!

And I think I understand all of it!!!
Coolness. I didn't know you programmed Starlifter!! Do you do any Visual Basic??

I'm a programmer, self-taught, going back to the mainframes of the 1978 era, when I was in high school. I had a FORTRAN '77 course in college, though.

LOL, I can program in any language, given a little lead time. It is all pretty much the same to me, though I actually like the older, non-bloat languages better, like GW Basic, or even QBasic.

So yes, have VB 6 and a shelf of books, though of late I've been doing more mathematical and theoretical stuff. I finally sat down several months ago and learned C++ so I could do some work in OpenGL. I'm not a "professional" programmer any more, but do it whenever I take a notion.

BTW, I've also have designed and programed AI (was the topic of some of my Master's research, too) and databases from the DOS prompt up, particularly in the 1980's. A year and a half ago, I almost decided to hop a plane and offer to help Sid Meier and his folks when I read about the problems they were having in the wake of the Reynolds et. al. departure to form BHG (Big Huge Games). I simply want to see some good AI in Civ III, and if they can't fix it in Civ III, I just may offer some help for Civ IV, esp. given these huge computational capacities of the target consumer systems nowadays. ;)

About your programming style... it is a good, structured stlye, with very maintainable, clean sections of code to follow.

What I added with the "goto" statements was not elegant, but is was compact and a fast way to do what I wanted without carving up parts of what you wrote. BTW, you can excise (remove) the sections I added without negative impact on your original program.

The general idea you are doing lends itself extremely well to matricies that can then be recursively processed to yeild an arbitrary number of questions. The big advantage to that is that you can very easily add/maintain/change questions, answers, resonse comments, and point values. It wil save you much time if you intend to make additional tests, plus the database is portable, very readable, and maintainable.

If you would like a little suprise, enter a minus sign, followed by your name (-cornmaster) and hit enter.

The bridge-building question was really evil...:slay:

:D Pretty good fun!! I got an alright score for my first time. That question though on the Spaceship Components was jus too hard!!!

Your Civ Score is 28
Your Civ Rating is 62.22222%

Dexter The Strong

YEAH!!! :goodjob:

37 score, 82.2222 rating, Mighty catullus.
I should have read the questions more thoroughly. Missed a couple by too fast clicking.

is it possible to get a full score in the quiz? 'Cauz I got every question right but still only got around 94%.
Is their more than one answer to some of the questions?

Thanx

I got a perfect score. ;)

But there are multiple answers to several question. And varing points depending on the answer you choose. Not to spoil it for anyone...but here is an example question were points can vary:
Example Question 1:
Which land unit has more than one movement point?
1) Armor
2) Knight
3) Fanatic
4) Nuke

Now the answers would look like this:
If you answered 1:
"Correct. Armor has 3 movement points. That scores you 2 points!!"
If you answered 2:
"Correct. Knights have 2 movements points. That scores you 1 point!"
If you answered 3:
"Incorrect. Fanatics have only one movement point."
If you answered 4:
"Incorrect. Although Nukes have way more than one movement point..it's an air unit and not land. Fooled you. :p"

Now the reason Armor scores 2 points and knights only one, is because armor has more movement points than knights.

Hopefully that will explain the points a little better.

i had 66.6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 etc...%
on this civtrivia quiz.
But some questions weren't very good either they were made to let you make a stupid mistake either you could only know they answer if you were deep in the civ community.

I disagree. There weren't any questions about the reason that Eyes of Night not having posted in ages being that he's testing a revolutionary new pullover with buckles at the back. All the questions were fair, apart perhaps from the one about the acronyms. If you hadn't read this site or Poly then you may not know about the OCC or SSC or FCT even though you may have used the strategies for years. I don't like the fact that you get more points for Armour than Knight just because it has more movement. Both answers are right and should be rewardedly the smae number of marks, or one should be removed and replaced by either Alpine Troops or Partisans as a trick question.

hmmm i just got civ 1 from my friend out of morbid curiousity and thought it was ok, definitly a predecessor to civ2 though.

I got a 97% my best so far. Hmmmmm:lol:

i remember doing something like this test for starcraft in my comp programming class. It was tough using HP and vs unit damages. I did it in pascal.

Was good to reminisce about civ1 :scan:

ph34r my 35/45! :D
I've never actually played Civ1, so I got thrown by the daft questions such as

"In CIV1, could settlers build roads in the middle of the ocean"

Um, no, how could they get out there in the first place...
But it appears I was wrong.

Cool test, I might make one for quake :)

What you do is put the settler on a boat, then activate it in the Ocean....and give the order to build a road. Then a Rail. I think you actually got a bonus trade from the rail!! I never tried building a City or Irrigation....hummmmm.... ;)

Technically, you can build roads/RRs on oceans in Civ II, also... I've done it, and yes, you do get the trade bonus for a road.

Here is an example with a RR nust north of Londong, and one to the whale... as you can see, there are 4 arrows on the ocean-Road tile (there should be 3), and 6 on the Whale (there should be 4).

It is not possible to do this with a regular engineer, though. It takes using cheat mode. ;)
