Civilization V Announced!

Thanksfor the link. Yes I know what soccer ball looks like, I thought of it. Perfect sphere would require pentagons (which I don't believe will be used in civ5, I refuse to believe in speculations), but I still think it would be easier to make it sphere-like with hex than with squares.

I didn't really got into that matter that much. Kind of signed somewhere with "whatever" attitude. Some infantry as far as I know :(
Sucks to be you, I'm going ROTC cyberwarfare path
Omg! The city has no name in the screenshot. Theyre removing citynames!!
That has to be the reason why theres no religion!
You are awesome!

To bad religion has been droped for civ 5 . I really like that part of Civ 4. It add some extra depth into the game.

Also instead on putting so much emphasis on battle, I would rather that the energy was put into the city building. Cause thats the best part of the game in my opinion.

Well, if we are to go into things like this, I'd point to:

Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne with a Landsknecht as an UU. This is just so stupid that I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Native Americans civ with Sitting Bull. Yeah, we've been through this hundrends of times. The worst solution possible.

Hagia Sofia with minarets, as mentioned above and literally dozens of such small annoying things.

There's also a deeper thing, which has been going on since Civ1 - the supposition that communism has low corruption (up to State Property = no upkeep in civ4). It's really rather hilarious, considering that a) corruption can be said to have been one of the main factors behind the inefficiency and subsequent demise of the communist regime in the Soviet blok and b) it is still a plague in post-soviet countries.

But all these issues are secondary - good gameplay mechanics should take precedence. Still, a historian by trade, I just hope that Firaxis would, for once, hire someone competent for all the historical stuff.

Agreed. It wouldn't be very expensive or take much trouble. And the same thing emphatically goes for once more giving players the ability to dismiss a suggested city name for the rest of the game.

I first typoed "suggested" as "sugfested". Sounds nasty...

Again, no one has actually said that religion is gone, it's just speculation (and I also hope it's not gone, although I wish they would give Peganism more of an actual religious stance and add another one or two religions).

My experience has been, also, that city building is generally a negative thing in Civ 4. I mean some buildings are required, but most can be skipped since they add in cost/health as much as they give in other attributes. I'd like better tile (hex?) management so that you can build a larger variety of items. Perhaps when you get, say, Rice you can plant x number of rice fields. At least it seems farms can be built on fields now. That was something I really didn't like in Civ 4 (and still don't like).

Don't know why everyone is even getting so worked up about religions anyways. If it IS truly out, and if the game IS truly as moddable as they say it is, then eventually, they can mod it back in!

And if that's the case, then you can have your Paganism, and even your flying spaghetti monster-ism all you want.

:D

Not everyone is good at modding or likes modding.

At this point, all I want to know is... what sort of specs do I need to play an enjoyable, fast... say "Giant Earth Map" type game? My laptop is good, but even at 3gigs of RAM, towards the end, it still takes a bit to play that mod.

Still though, if I get to Hong Kong anytime soon, I'm going to seriously have to buy Genghis Kai a beer.

well, already some days since the announcement and still no major feature in any gaming site, c´mon people earn your internet traffic, I WANT DETAILS!!!! :crazyeye:, nooo, wait, i want a demo!!!,,, NOOOO, better, I WANT IT TO BE FREAKING FALL ALREADY!!!!

There is an interview with Sid and Jon in Aprils Gamerpro magazine apparently. I checked around were I live and Walmart even carries that magazine, I don't normally waste my money on game mags, but for Civ5 info I will.

I'm looking extremely foreword for civ 5 I liked civ 4 but I felt like Firaxis was just suger coating it with each new expansion, and it still felt like a war game and the promised diplomacy sucked. And some of the civics didn't really make any sense to me, the worst I thought was Democracy. It just didn't fell like civ and I couldn't well get addicted to it like civ 3 . These are my wishes hopefully they can come true.

1. Better diplomacy and a better more sophisticated United Nations (Didn't like that only the strongest could become secretary)

2.Better graphics (I know graphics may not matter or you cant have it and good game too. I don't believe that, But think about civ 3 graphics, to me way better and looked like they put effort)

3. More sophisticated ways to govern your civ (For me state property could have been more specific is it total or socialist or like slavery who exactly is a slave your own people or conquered people.

4. More building options for workers (Like civ 3 because I miss those improvements like an airfield.)

5.I don't know if I really care about this or if it does need improvement. Character traits I thought some of the leaders traits were quite weird or useless in civ 4

6.Better more exciting not repetitive battles. And I know this might change what civ really is but you have turned based when you move a unit and then it zooms in to the tile (or hexagon) and becoming like a mini RTS.

7. Like every one else smarter AI,because most of them just want war.

8. More realistic trade and like civ2 ship supplies to cities.

9. This is my favorite idea so far deeper customization of units

10. A modding program like civ3! We all can't speak techie Firaxis.

11. And my second favorite Idea bring it to the consoles.(I'm sorry but ever sense I got my 360 I got tired of the computer with upgrading everything constantly etc. And you can throw another stone at me but I think computer gaming is endangered.)

12.Bring back old terrain like marsh, volcano and possibly new ones.

13. And lasts but not least (and hopefully I stop editing and adding ) Make more realistic (politics)

14. Not can't help it. I noticed civ5 might be a hexagonal grid but what about an option to choose what type of grid. Regular square grid like civ 4and then x cross like civ 3 and 2

I could probably go on and on thinking on how to improve it but this is what I have.

Whoo that's a mouth fool :)

I like to mod and make scenarios but when civ 4 just came with a cruddy map maker that really disappointed me. I shouldn't have to look or learn how to use XML.

I regret, and indeed resent, the change to hexagons, for two reasons. Firstly, it reduces the movement possibilities from 8 directions to six, and secondly I like to draw maps as soon as I know enough about my world; one can get squared paper quite easily, or even draw one's own with a simple DTP program, but hex paper ? Never seen any on sale anywhere, and drawing jiggly lines is a very tedious process to which, I suppose, I must resign myself.
As for the other features, it can only be hoped that the producers have taken note of at least some of the wishes expressed by posters in this and other forums in regard to what should be added and, importantly, what should be retained, or perhaps reintroduced, from earlier incarnations if Civ. My great hope is that not too much effort has been expended on eye candy at the expense of gameplay: personally, I'd be quite happy with units represented by things like chessmen, one tree representing a forest, cities by a few standardised forms, and so on, provided that the gameplay is good. Think how much computing power that would save.

Hex paper should actually be pretty common. I used to get it fairly readily 20+ years ago for RPG maps.

XML is actually quite simple. It just looks intimidating at first. After that it's just like the editor, though with a lot more scrolling. Copy and paste is your friend here!

We shouldn't lose modding power to cater to those that need an gui for the most simple things.

I prefer having something in the core game.

I resent that extremely smug and elitist comment.

Well, most of us get along fine with XML. Frankly, the modding power of civ4 would not be possible if an editor like the one in civ3 were used.

IMO allowing a few extra people to make simple mods is less important than allowing for major mods to be created. Fall From Heaven would not be possible on civ3, for example. But you would have us go without mods like Fall From Heaven, because it would allow a few more people to make the nth mod that adds civ x.

Look, its harder to make a GUI for modding. If Firaxis invests time into a GUI, then they might not bother with the excellent approach they took with Civ 4, where everything was made in XML+Python, save for the game engine. Not everything can be Warcraft 3. And really XML is like a GUI properties editor, find the unit in the right file, know what each element does, and then modify the correct element.
