In musical theory terms it is pre jazz music, in popular terms it is orchestra music.

I used to think that music played with an orchestra was "classical music", but several people who studied music said that's wrong and that classical only referred to an era. Ever since then I been trying to find a word for music played by an orchestra but no one would tell me what word to use.

They're right, in a limited sense.

Classical is an era of music that preceded the Romantics and followed the Baroques. The most recognized example would be Mozart.

However, the word today is generally used to refer to nearly all orchestral style music.
