Industrial Expansion
- Andreas Papandreou, President of Crete-Cyprus
The PASOK government hopes to expand even more the Industry of Crete-Cyprus through direct state investment. The construction of new industries shall employ more workers, increase production, increase purchasing power of the people, thus leading to more profit from taxation. The economy is expected to continue to grow, slowly but steadily while PASOK claims that in a few years, Crete-Cyprus will reach the economic level of other countries.
The GDP of Cyprus has increased from 1960 by 450%, a stunning growth rate within such a sort period of time as two years. Economists from all over the world speak of a Crete-Cyprus economic miracle while many support that the mixed economy of Crete-Cyprus, which includes strong government investment combined with free market, is the best way to develop an economy.
Konstantinos Karamanlis of New Democracy has stated that the growth is imaginary, as Crete-Cyprus has incurred a huge amount of debt. However, economists prove him wrong as the debt of Crete-Cyprus is 8 IP while the GDP of the country is now 9 IP. And considering that by 1964, when Crete-Cyprus will repay it's debts, the Yuan Dynasty may not exist, the debt would have been decreased to 5 IP.
Minister of Defense
- George Papandreou, Minister of Defense of Crete-Cyprus
George Papandreou, son of President Andreas Papandreou, has been appointed Minister of Defense of Crete-Cyprus. The 40 years old politician has been quite energetic and has gained the support of a large part of the population. His first move as Minister of Defense was to visit the Aegean Islands and attend a ceremony to honor the soldiers who died during the invasion.
Many political analysts believe that this appointment has far less to do with controlling the army, as Andreas Papandreou is a firmly democrat, and more to do with the succession to the party leadership. Andreas Papandreou is old and despite his popularity, he is not expected to run for a third term. So, many factions have sprung up inside PASOK, trying to enforce their leader as the leader of PASOK.
Andreas Papandreou wants to enforce his son as leader of PASOK, so he wants to give a ministry to George Papandreou, in order to both give him publicity, thus gaining public support for him, as well as giving a strong message to other factions inside the party. George Papandreou is well liked among many members of PASOK and the other factions of the party will most likely submit to him.
Konstantinos Karamanlis of New Democracy called the decision of the President patronizing and nepotistic and said that no family member of Konstantinos Karamanlis would gain a ministry ever if New Democracy was to become the governing party. Andreas Papandreou replied that George Papandreou was given the ministry not due to family relations but because of his personal merit and that if he was proven incapable, he himself would fire him from his post.
Rally of New Democracy
- Konstantinos Karamanlis, leader of New Democracy, at the rally at Chania
Konstantinos Karamanlis, leader of New Democracy, has also been quite energetic and already prepares for the 1965 elections, which he believes would put an end to the reign of the Socialist PASOK and would mark the domination of the conservative right in Crete-Cyprus. Despite the popularity of PASOK, New Democracy has managed to get a hold tight on right wingers, essentially uniting all of them under their banner, while young people show more support for Konstantinos Karamanlis, whose speeches have become more and more nationalistic and populist in an attempt to garner popular support.
Although PASOK has been largely successful in it's governance, the fact remains that Crete-Cyprus is far behind other nations in terms of economy and territory while the youth, according to psychologists, wanting to have their teenage revolt, admire more and more the conservative Konstantinos Karamanlis and somewhat despite the tightening socialist control of the economy and it's inability to adopt far right nationalistic views.
At a rally of New Democracy supporters in Chania, Crete, Konstantinos Karamanlis promised to increase military expenditure, open up the economy and spoke with a further to the right rhetoric than he has used to. He said that Crete-Cyprus is a phoenix which is arising from the flames, and that it is destined to revive the greatness of Hellenism. He has also spoken openly about unification with Greece and a liberation of Macedonia, Constantinople and Minor Asia from the Roman and the Turks and the reviving of Alexander the Great's Empire. As absurd as that may sound to foreigners, the creation of a Greater Hellas encompassing Mainland Greece and Minor Asia is seen by many as a solution to the economic problems of Crete-Cyprus, as there will be a larger market, more resources and a larger population. And considering the already remarkable economic growth of the poor islands of Crete, Cyprus and the Aegean Isles, a Greater Hellas would be destined to be a superpower. Even some PASOK members have supported expansion abroad.
Analysts warn, however, that despite the rising popularity of New Democracy, PASOK continues to have the most popular support, with about about 64% of the population supporting them in contrast to New Democracy's 36%. PASOK continues to be a favorite to win the 1965 elections and any celebrations by New Democracy would be premature.
Crete-Cyprus on India
- Themistocles Sofoulis, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Themistocles Sofoulis, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced that the government of Crete-Cyprus strongly supports the Delhi-Lahore Republic and condemns attempts by France, the Soviet Union, Nanyang and Avalon to colonize India.
His statement is: "Crete-Cyprus, a peace loving democratic nation which supports the right of self-governance for all nations, strongly condemns the attempts by France, the Soviet Union, Nanyang and Avalon to colonize India and supports the Delhi-Lahore Republic in it's effort to get rid of foreign influence in India. Every nation deserves the right to self-governance and Crete-Cyprus is deeply worried about how it's allies, which are democratic and communist nations, forget about their ideologies and enslave the native peoples of India. Crete-Cyprus urges it's allies to show that democracy and communism support the struggle of the oppressed people and are not imperialistic ideologies. Only then can we exterminate the influence of the snake of Fascism on the oppressed people of the world."
