Clearing off grievances

So - current game, and Pericles has about 500 grievances against me on account of all the cities I took off him. Well, I offered peace but he wouldn't take it - I notice that if there is a military emergency against you, the participants will never make peace until the emergency is over, no matter how badly they are doing. Pretty well everyone else is denouncing me "because I have caused grievances to another player". 500 grievances will take forever to expire. So supposing I just declare war on Pericles and wipe him out (he has two cities left)? Then there is no-one surviving with grievances against me. Is that right?
 
I just made peace with China even with an active military emergency they called against me still active. Although now they have 650 grievances against me and one city left, sadly their capital.

It's a tough position, though, since in the peace deal when you accept the cities, you get a bunch of grievances again. But if you wipe them out, you get 150 grievances against every civ left. So kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't.
 
It only means that grievances are working well.

They don't though - with some extreme exceptions like in this thread, grievances expire FAR too quickly - what's the grievances from denouncement supposed to accomplish for example, when they expire completely in just 2-3 turns?

I think you need to play a slower game speed. Are you playing quick or online speed, by any chance? ;)

1. The example in this thread is not about denouncement but about almost killing a civ. Not sure why you want to prove your argument by giving a different example - I was commenting an OP.
2. Also not sure why you want to compare an "almost genocide" which generates tons of grievances and makes other civs hate you (as it should be) with a "harsh diplo statement" which may or may not lead to war. 2-3 turns could be several or tens of years in the game. People complained for 2 years that civs remembered this kind of small incidents for almost entire game. Now they don't which is good.
 
Conquest rather than genocide - the people are still alive, they just have a different ruler. My question was rather whether you generate more hate by conquering 75% of a civ's cities or 100% (if you eliminate a leader they can't hate you any more).
 
About the big penalty for killing a civ, my preferred approach is to arrange that the one city they have left when I make peace is in the middle of my territory. When it rebels, it finishes wiping them out but *I* don't get blamed.

This takes some planning, though - you usually have to bypass and picket a small city during your rolling conquest.
