Clive1 - Monarch (Training ?) game

:mischief:

With a thunderstorm raging outside the window, in the dark of night, Bede the Gentle was overcome by bloodlust and Count Vlad the Impaler, aka Mursilis the Merciless, appeared. So, on a dark and stormy night:

At the beginning (1040):

C1_1050.jpg

In 1050 Catherine's City was belonged to the Hittites.

In 1100 two more Russian cities were enjoying the benefits of Count Drakul's benevolent rule:

C1_1100.jpg

And by 1150:

C1_1150.jpg

We have a third army in the field, yclpet Drakul's Dreadnoughts, so once Riverbend finishes Bach's start the Pentagon.

I bought some maps from Cleopatra so we can now see all the continent, but the last civilization is still missing. Judging from eyeballed productivity estimates we have a lock on Bach's and could get Copernicus if we swap Kanesh from a bank to the Observatory. With the proper planning and a prebuild we could probably get Newton's U as well and not spend a whole lot on science doing it, though we certainly have the economy for it.

I probably have three settlers on go to orders. If they land on a spot on a river that fills in the cultural gaps, plant a city. Keep cash rushing workers out of the Russian towns until they are down to pop1.

The key to rapid military victory is concentration of force and speed. Put together a juggernaut ot two and just keep rolling. Stop only long enough to heal and don't use healthy troops as garrison units.

Once Smolensk falls (two knight armies, a couple elite units and some trebs from Rostov will do the job nicely) you could take a peace treaty with Cathy for whatever technology she has and money, leaving her with one town on the coast with no iron, no horses and no saltpeter but lots of marshland. :D

On the subject of picking Cleopatra's pocket: I researched a valuable optional tech (Printing Press, it allows contact trading), then dialed her up and took all her money and her maps for it. Keep an eye on everybody's cash position and sell contacts for either tech and gold or gold. There are two caravels sailing the southern oceans trying to find the lost civilization. If we get there before any one else we have the opportunity to make some more money and it will make our maps really valuable when we get Navigation.

I'm tempted to suggest researching towards Physics at all deliberate speed with a pre-build for Newton's U rather than going for MT, as we can always trade for MT.

A gentle reminder: pay really close attention to trading opportunities (check every turn), as my nose tells me we missed one or more opportunities. Perfectly understandable, given the wars, but another thing that separates the sheep from goats is unremitting attention to trade. At this stage of the game knowledge is becoming very costly so it makes sense to pull as much gpt from the other nations as we can. If you trade luxuries do it with someone you want as a long term partner as the boost in happiness makes them more productive and even taking buckets of gpt for lux will often increase their income (trading resources or tech drains their treasuries as they will use their available cash to upgrade military if the resource allows it and taking gpt for tech pulls money out of their economy).

Over to viper!

Got it! That lost civ's probably way behind in tech unless they already know people to trade with. If not, hopefully they have some gold.
Edit: @Admiral, you mean me making an SG with AW or No Research? I was considering about making another, so that idea might work. If was going to do No Research it might go a little too slow on Monarch, although I could be wrong (in which case it would probably be Emperor.) Always war sounds like fun... :mischief: maybe on Regent, possibly Monarch (it would depend on the other settings.) I'll think about it.

I hope I didn't mess up too badly on my last couple turns, I think that we'll be fine.
Turn 1
Begin researching Metallurgy
Turn 2
All 3 armies close in on Smolensk.
Turn 3
Kadesh founded. Smolensk captured.
Turn 4
Not much
IBT- Mongol galley is off our coast. I protect myself from potential attack, nothing lands yet.
Turn 5
Begin researching Military Tradition. Trade Metallurgy and 218 gold to Cleopatra for Physics (she didn't want to buy Metallurgy for GPT, so I grabbed Physics instead.) No one else is really worth trading to right now, they're so far behind in techs.
Turn 6
The spot I protected from Mongolia is fine and the galley goes away. Adana founded.
Turn 7
Russia is destroyed.
IBT- The Mongols land sword at 2 tile island. I get a peace treaty next turn, neither side gives anything. Swordsman is trapped there for now.
Turn 8
Nothing much.
Turn 9
I can't resist this tempation. Hopefully it's the right thing to do. I'm not a bit scared of War Elephants, so... I declare war on India. Bombay and Chittagong immediately captured.
IBT-War Elephant defeats a Knight about to attack Ugarit, I guess that's a GA for India.
Turn 10
I sign an MA with Egypt against India. Punjab captured.

Is anyone else having trouble seeing the screenie? All I get is the red "X"...

Was a declaration on India part of the immediate plan? that's another one of those etiquette things that you don't generally do at the end of your turns....

EDIT: Nevermind, I can see the screenie now. :hmm:

Questions/comments: Did you end the Military Alliance before signing peace with Temujin? Had the 20 turns run out? Um... building banks in size 6 towns... I'd build a worker and an aqueduct in those after those banks are finished. Growing a city past size 6 will give a greater economic benefit than a bank in a town that can't grow...

I don't think the DoW on India was planned, IIRC it was tentatively mentioned a fairly long time ago. Sorry if it was bad ettiquette, this was my first SG :( .

All alliances were over before signing peace with the Mongols, they ran out. That town was going to build an Aqueduct after the Bank.

Good grief , havent you people got anything better to do :)

Never expected to be up this quick again.

Viper275 - Just played
MSTK- on vacation 31 Jul - 19 Aug
Sir Clive - Up
mtgfreak - vacation 31 Jul - 13/14 Aug
Admiral Kutzov - On deck
Bede -

At this rate we will be finished before MSTK and mtgfreak get back from holiday !

It's 23-00 here so I won't be playing tonight. I'm out until late tomorrrow too (back about 00-00) , but seing as there is no work the next day I may well play then . If not I will play Saturday am (London time) and post some time Saturday.

Looks like great sets of turns from Bede and Viper - this is turning into just the sort of game I had hoped for - I am learning a lot every turn.

Re Bede's remarks on being careful about missing trading opportunities - if anyone hasn't got it yet I would thoroughly recommend using the MapStat utility. This is the first game I have ever used it on and it has saved me a lot of time. It will be a permanent fixture for me from now on !

Hopefully post some thoughts tomorrow.

@Bede - where did you get your Graphics from ? I used to have Snoopys terrain but my HDD failed in Dec last year and I have never bothered to reload so I am now just playing with the standard stuff. I do like the mine graphic in yuor screen shots - don't recall having seen that anywhere else before.

Stray thoughts & discussion points:

IRS in captured towns is cool. One of the best lessons from this game.

Up the science enough to get Newton in 4 (90-100%), then decrease slider each turn. Where to put it? Tarsus?

Upgrade trebs?

Ungarrison inland cities? Need every unit we can find for war with India. Lux + slider control should maintain order.

Bring in the Mongols v. India?

All cav. that gets built goes to form up in Hubishna for strike up the coast (after we get 6-10 there).

Smoke over Chocolatetown: Bring in Attila to stomp Gandhi?

I would have set up a little for India, but I think we can take 'em as is. Good gambit :) Need to get units to the front; towns look a little weak in the face of counterattacks.

@ clive - form up groups in border towns until you have enough force to grab land. Your main strike is from Punjab. Kill 'em all :ar15:

Wondering the same thing myself.

agree

You guys really need to go digging around the C&C forum. LOTS of cool graphics/mods/whatever in there.

Personally, I liked his old mines better...

Course maybe I shouldn't tell people to go looking around too much, IIRC (and I do), I bothered Bede for a couple of his graphics files in the past... :mischief:

loading snoopy as we (I?) post. Have to revisit pounder - cool stuff

Warpstorm's terrain, Nessian's mines, Advisors by Tae Shala, Body by Fisher.

Sorry about the mines, Sesn, but I kept losing the dark ones in the mountains. On jacking up science: time acquisition of the technology to the pre build. It's cheaper that way. One of the side effects of not knowing something is it raises the cost of learning it. In other words, as soon as somebody who knows somebody learns something the cost of acquisition goes down for the second somebody.

Bede breaks into song and goes skipping off into the sunset "Should a body meet somebody coming through the rye...Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly...We're off to see the Wzard, the wonderful Wzard of Oz....Lions and tigers and bears, Oh my!!...(Pace slows to a crawl) Yesterday, when all my dreams seemed so far away...Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes, are calling...Swing low, sweet chariot....Old Man River, Old Man River...Summertime, and the living is easy..."

BTW, cancel the library builds in the towns no longer on the border. Don't the cultural expansion, granaries are more important and the loss to corruption means the contribution of a library will be miniscule right now, pump up the population and use scientists if you need a scientific boost.

:rotfl:

Bede, have you been dipping into Scout's Guinness?

That was quite a little medley you put together there. Make sure to copyright it before someone steals it. :)

Aw c'mon... I'm actually a builder at heart. *hic*. Okay... I used to be a builder.

Did you guys notice that I picked on viper for signing peace, but not for starting (another) war? :mischief: Sometimes... audacity works. And that move was nothing if not audacious. :D

I noticed

but I think we can take 'em as is. Good gambit

See?

@ bede, scout, sesn - Can anyone spare a pint?:)

I was digging around the forums and found this quote. Probably should have asked at the beginning, but:

Since we're going to be playing this SG for a while, I'd like to know a bit more about my "classmates". I don't care so much about skill level as style...and it doesn't really matter, I'm just trying to gain some perspective.

Here are some questions for my compatriots:

How would you describe your style of play? Builder? Warmonger?

What do you tend to seek first, military strength, commerce, production, or science?

Do you have preferred civ traits? (This is not intended to start a 'best civ' sub-thread...)

In warfighting, do you prefer to "blitz" or use a "combined arms" approach?

Do you have a favorite Age?

-----
My answers: I'm a confessed building addict (who doesn't mind occasional bloodshed). I like building every possible improvement in any city that can build it. I seek production first. With shields I can build improvements to enhance my commerce and science and units to defend (or take) cities. As a builder, my preferred civ traits are (in no particular order) Industrious, Scientific, Religious, and Commercial. In early and late wars, I prefer to blitz. In industrial era wars, "combined arms" is key, IMHO. And I love the Industrial Age.

@ scout good questions. sorry for the plagarism.

My answers: I'm better at war than building and thus tend to seek military strength. first. I like efficient workers, so I tend to choose Industrious civs. Before this game, I never used artillery before 'real' artillery. I like armor (tanks or modern). usually if I'm having success, the game is all over except for the milking. I tend to focus on shileds over food (and the improvements that help, i.e. CH, factory, etc.)

Scout said that?!?!

My how things change.

AT - I don't do pints or Guinness, but swing on by for a frosty Bud. ;)

EDIT: D'oh! Apparently missed Scout's post just three above mine....

Here's a little snippet that should amuse, and may be indicative of a turning point: :mischief:

Turn 6/610 AD
Advance Cats to Amatikulu, cover w/ some knights
Battle for Swazi
Zulu pike kills a knight, Elite knight kills a pike (2/5) Retetreata couple... dangit...not gonna get Swazi...
Pike from Dodge to San Antonio...that wasn't smart...
Warior from San Antonio to New Orleans
Change queue in Pitt to Temple after short rushing w/ a pike (worried about culture here...)
Rush court in Cincinatti
While hovering over Atlanta to wake a pike, I noted a couple of cats in Atlanta, and woke them up too, and sent them southward...

My handwritten log gets a little sketchy here...probably from the malice in my heart and bloodlust in my soul as I eyed Tlacopan. I swear by the Sword of Saint Michael, all the log says is "Declare War on Aztecs". The screencap shows I captured Tlacopan on this turn... and I seem to remember using knights to do it... (it's tired, and I'm getting late)

Played half of my turns. Fairly slow progress I 'm afraid. Also almost all of my battles have been fought with trebuchets and armies so haven't had any luck producing any more leaders.

Pre turn check -

Mil Trad is due in 1 turn. Move sci down to 50% - still due in 1 but we make another 100g
this turn. Next turn will switch to ToG. Not sure where I am going to build it yet.

High production towns are mostly building Knights + Banks + a couple building Unis
Low prod towns are mostly building Marketplaces / Libraries and military
Riverbend is building pentagon.

A lot of the northern captured towns are building stuff like Musketman which will
take about 50 turns to build, and these towns don't have Barracks. Will switch some of
these to Granary (although they will soon hit size 6 and will need aqueducts)

Only civ who has a tech to sell us is Egypt who have navigation. Best deal I can get is
we give Ivory , World Map, Saltpeter + 800 g. The most we could possible sell it on for
it is 89g. I'll leave it for the minute.

We are at war with India and we have an alliance with Egypt against them

IT . We get Mil Trad. Science advisor suggest we build military academy.

Alter science to 70 % - ToG in 5 turns - +133 gpt or 90 % - 4 turns -11 gpt.
Go with the 5 turn option.

India attacks our troops north of Bombay with a couple of Jumbos
and kill an elite.

Set Greenland to build Military Academy.

1255 AD (1) Workers build more roads and irrigate outer towns. Lose a couple
of archers to Jumbos north of Bombay. Send suicide galley West from Moscow

IT We can get Navigation + 304g + 8gpt from Egypt for Mil Trad.Don't know whether
it is really :( to take this but they are not that far away from us in tech
so they will get there soon anyway so I take it. Set Tarsus to Colosseum (pre build
for Newton's)

1260 AD (2) Re capture Ugarit. Workers and military continue
moving northwards.

IT No trades possible. Keep building more of the same in towns which fnish their
builds.

1265 Ad (3) Catapults near Ugarit head towards Karachi. Army attacks Karachi, kills
a couple of defensive units but gets badly damaged

IT No trades possible . No new build orders required. 2 turns to ToG - we're making
144 gpt.India send more Jumbos to defend Karachi

1270 Ad (4) General worker movement. Settle Marsh Border. Army captures Karachi.
There is now an iron in no mans land east of Punjan. There is enough
space to settle a coastal city north of the iron but it will take quite a few turns
to reach it .

IT No trades possible.

1275 AD (5) Settler will reach iron east of Punjab in 4 turns . General worker / troop movement north.
Move Armies / Cats towards Dacca.

Screenie to follow .....

@ sir clive - looks good.:)

@ all - nice gambit viper :) Sir Clive will have this just about wrapped up when it gets to me. where do we want to go next - arabs or egypt? Looks like my turn will be finish Gandhi and set up for ...?

@ bede - shoot to thrill, way to kill...buying a stairway to heaven...when you wanna get down...go, go godzilla...sweet home alabama...ride of the valkaries.
