Clive1 - Monarch (Training ?) game

20th Maine-wasn't that the regiment led by that relunctant soldier and classical scholar Joshua Chamberlain, Col at Gettysburg, later Brigadier Gen under Grant, ultimately president of Bowdoin?
...and he was as lucky as good. He made one good (and brave) decision at one point... but he also had terrain on his side, IIRC.
Stuart had dash but no class and less staying power.
Oh Stuart had class... much more than Forrest. And Cavalry has never been about "staying power". But Stuart was "all show and no go". At least... not going anywhere important. Gimme a big enough circle and I can ride around anybody's army. Forest would close with his enemy. Mosby would hit them in the middle of the night and wrap railroad rails around trees. (Kinda rough on logisitics networks...)

Now... when you guys get to skirmishing in the defense... you should borrow a page from Forrest's playbook on the campaigning between Corinth and Shiloh. If it hadn't been for Forrest, there would not have even been a battle at Shiloh.

Skirmishing is powerful stuff in Civ war, see 2.0 Gram. :D

But isn't all about the terrrain?

You mean the ostrich feathers?

Ay, Cap'n. Pick 'em off in the open, preserve the troops, wear 'em down to archers and spears from tanks and infantry.

Well done Viper.

Knights are 70 shields, MDI 40shields and pikes and trebs 30 shields. We need to find four towns: one each at 12 spt and 8spt and two others at 6spt and we can produce a nice and well defended reinforcement group every five turns. They should arrive at the front just as needed. We should be just about right. If we can ship workers and a settler with each group, even better.

Shouldn't this be a 14 (or 7) spt town for the Knights Bede ?

Yes, I believe you are right, Clive. Apparently Bede was no math major.

Doc - Promotions are based on the ability to kill a unit, which the H'wacha can do. Therefore, is it possible to spawn a leader with one? I'm inclined to say no, but I'm not sure. I know that ships and planes can't, but that's because of the inability to transport the leader more then anything, I would say. A H'wacha is already on the ground....

Yes, that is very surprising. :D

I wonder if it's been changed in a patch or not? Your post refers to a mod/t3est/something, and the other post refers to version 1.00.

Although I don't see why they would change that in a patch...

Should we call our diversionary force the 7th Calvary?

In 1.22, are Hwachas the only lethal ground bombards?

Admiral Kutzov said:

Until the Modern Era, yes. Cruise Missiles can be lethal as well. Though using one consumes it, it does count as a ground bombarding unit.

Bombers are potentially lethal. I know, bombers are not a ground unit... but the lethal bomber has important tactical implications. I believe there are some sea units with potentially lethal bombardment as well. I think the Byzantine Dromon has this capability... I think the English Man-o-War got tweaked a little, but I can't recall if that was one of the tweaks.

Today was the day I had taken off work to go for my annual visit to the Great British Beer Festival.

So I am afraid I came back to complete my turns slightly inebriated :(

Here's the turn log

Turn 5 - 890 AD

As previously discussed try to change the core to build units which will not waste shields

Current shield production -

Oasisland 13 spt
Aleppo 12 spt
Karhayuk 10 spt
Vineyard 10 spt
Greenland 9 spt
Grassy 9 spt
Ankuwa 9 spt
Hattusas - settler factory - 9gpt
Kanesh , Iron River 8spt
Pompeii , Plains City , Yalburt , Samuha
Osgiliath , Shimonosek , OK Corral , Silk Forest,
Tarsus , 7gpt

Hattusha , Ivrix 6gpt

Kummani , Rubble River 5 gpt,

Desert Filler , Tyrana 4 gpt.

Therefore IMHO

Karhayuk + Vineyard build any units where build cost divisible by 10
Greenland , Grassy , Ankuwa all need 1 more shield pt to be effiecient
Kanesh, Iron river build M inf (40) in 5 , Courthouse (80) in 10 or Bank (160) in 20
Tarsus can build Knights (10)

Can't exchange shields for food in Oasisland or Aleppo to gain any advantage , and
can't get Greenland, Grassy, Ankuwa up to 10spt so leave things as is

Pompeii , Plains City , Yalburt , Samuha
Osgiliath , Shimonosek , OK Corral , Silk Forest,
Tarsus , at 7gpt should (I suppose ) all be building knights in 10 if they
have barracks.

Found NeverJapanese between Edo and Kyoto.

Send captured Japanese workers towards NeverJapanese to join city next turn

IT - Switch Riverbend to Leonardos . Not sure how close any of the others are but
we have plenty of switches available if we don't get it and we have plenty of
cash to spend on ugrading our units if we do. Samuha can build knight in 10 but has no
Barracks :( switch to Barracks).

Shgimoneski switches knight -> barracks, Yokahoma Pikeman -> temple, Edo Pikeman->walls,
satsuma pikeman->library, Nara pikeman->worker, we are now (I think) only building military in tiwns which have barracks.

Turn 6 - 900 AD
Add some of the captured japanese workers to newly formed towns in the Sw to grow
from size 1 to 4/5/6. Carry on roading / irrigating land where possible.

Egypt want Incense (1 of our 3) , Gems (our only one) and 1300 for Astronomy.

Don't want to get rid of our only spare gems so offer Incense + 1600 which they
accept

Nobody has much money so can't really sell Astronomy on but we are way ahead in gold
and I want to keep up in tech.

Now see what they are willing to pay for gems (they now have 1600g) - only 200
so I decline.

Build embassy with the Mongols. They have 2 iron , 1 Horse, 1 wine, 3 furs, 1 elephant.
Also MoM + 5 units, in Karakorum,

It Grassy beach-> auqeduct (don't think it can get above 9 spt otherwise). Have to
employ another taxman in Greenland as it riots. Karhuyuk , University->Courthouse,
Shioneski barracks->knight (it's producing 7spt :) ). Nagaski (crap outer town , hugh corruption)
musketmnan->worker. Economics is due in 3 at 20% sci at +246gpt. Still 6 turns until Allepo can build
finishes Smith's though :(. Knocking sci down to 10% means 7 turns until Econ so leave it where it is.
No trades possible.

Turn 7 - 910 AD
General movement of workers. Move spare military units northwards

IT - Rubble River completes Market - start Temple. Kanesh is at 8spt -> longbowman due in 5
Never Japanese riots (my fault for addng too many workers :( ) up lux to 20%

Turn 8 - 920 AD
Thnk about when we should attack the Russians. IMHO not before the end of my turns,
but I will continue to move troops towards Osgiliath and Emar.
General movement of workers to work and military northwards.

IT Oasisland Knight->Granary, Osgiliath Knight->knight, Pompeii Knight->Knight,
Egyptians are building Bach's. Maya complete Sun Tzu, Arabs start Leonardo's.
Arab's start Sistine, Russians start Leonardo's .Russians start Cops.
Mongol's start Leonardo's.

Turn 9 - 930 AD

Rocky river founded betweemn Nara and Osaka. Send settlers towards SW to fill in the
(very few) gaps remaining.

Mongols demand theology from us. I don't normally decline these threats but

a) We don't have a border with them
b) we have reasonably strong military

so I tell them where to go.

So (inevitably) they declare (Oh **** - I did say I wanted to practice my warmongering didn't I :) )

We learn Economics. Switch to Music Theory (due in 15)
Ankuwa Longbow->Longbow, Vineyard Knight->Cops, Nagasaki worker->worker,
NeverJapanese Worker->Barracks.

Egypt are building Bach's

Alleppo Palce->Smith's (due in 3 turns)

Get Alliance with the Mayans against the Mongols (Give them Theology)
Lux tax goes down to 0

Turn 10 - 940 AD

General movement of troops.

There may be a couple of workers / settlers still moving towards the SW - my aplologies
if I haven't stopped them all.

NOTE - We are now at war with the Mongols and have a military alliance against them
with the Mayans. Sorry if this was really :( but they threatened and we have a reasonable military and they do not have a border with us so I though I would let them do their worst (especially as I have now finished my turns :) )

I just love it when an empire won't fit on a screenie anymore. :goodjob:

Some comments for you Sir Clive:

1) I have been known to mix alcohol and Civ on occasion. Bede once had to clean up a mess I made after Sesn handed me some Sipahi on a night I decided to drink Guiness....

2) I like the way you immediately got an ally after Temujin declared.

digression
My guess: Temujin is looking for his Golden Age, and he's going to use Keshiks to trigger it. You guys need to watch out for those guys... they (and Conquistadors) can move out of the fog and through mountains like you would not believe. In GOTM32 I got a lot of MDI killed in the mountains my Conquistadors. It is truly a Good Thing that you do not have a Mongol border (yet).

Consider allying with Egypt against Mongols...(I love a good dogpile.)

/digression

3) One bit of constructive criticism: Don't join slaves to cities, for 2 reasons: a) foreign citizens increase flip risks and b) you don't pay gpt maintenance for slave workers.

4) Glad to see you go for Smith's Trading Co. That is one of my favorite wonders.

Today was the day I had taken off work to go for my annual visit to the Great British Beer Festival.

So I am afraid I came back to complete my turns slightly inebriated

Sounds like a plan to me

Consider allying with Egypt against Mongols.

In the works.

BTW - got it

It must have been the rare roast beef (or the vodka); for whatever reason, I got hyper aggressive.

I changed production in 16 cities before starting my turns. If that's too many without discussion, please let me know.

Hattusas is size 4 and a 4 turn pump if you move a cit from plains irrigated wheat to mined BG afterevery settler build.

The bad news is we're at war with Cathy. Since we're in the MA, I dont' think it is still legal to kill the messenger.

940 - set up for Barbarossa

950 - set up. Disband scout.

960 - still deploying.

IBT - Finish Smith's. Cathy moving spear + 2 archer south into our territory. Apparently Chernobyal came early and fried her brain as there is no open space. Massive smoke over Chocolatetown- we have ungarrisioned cities- looks like Cathy is trying to "sneak" attack.

970 - deploying

980 - Alace huyuk founded. Egypt joines the crusade against the pagan Mongols

990 - Tell Cathy to get spear + archers out. She leaves with a whimper

1000 - Roast beast fires up the ruler, declare on Cathy. Take St. Pete, Lahore.

IBT - lose workers, knight to CA

1010 - take Orenburg, Moscow (Longstreet commanding)

IBT - Arabs build Leo's

1020 - Vladivostock taken

1030 - Take Novograd

1040 - following Clive example, (Grant is off the wagon), lose count of turns, play extra turn. Take Bryansk. 1000 apologies.

Need to redeploy for finishing attacks on Cathy. Also need to check MM of cities + production.

Egypt is research machine - must have early Einstein. No noise from Mongols since we brought in Maya + Egypt. Hope nobody is too p.o'd about this series of events. Worry about cultural filps?

Rush to MT? We have lots of knights to upgrade! :)

Haven't quite figured out Yekaterinaburg, but Russian supply of saltpeter is cut and their AC and horses are gone.

Kill 'em viper or bede - I forget who's next :ar15:

@ scout - smoke over Chocolatetown(home of the hershey bar), etc. roughly translates to "I have an idea" - everybody duck and cover

Looking pretty good. It'll probably be a while before those Keshiks show up at our borders. Since the Maya are much closer the Mongols will probably get their GA there.

Doesn't look very good for Russia. Yekaterinburg is right next to us so it'll be easy to take. We still have those 2 armies from our war with Japan, right? Might as well use them if we aren't already.

BTW, Bede's next.

You guys are having way too much fun!!

On to whatever Russian towns are left.

And see what I can do about relieving the Egyptians of some of their cash so they will have to fire Einstein.

BTW, got it.

Will post some comments later.

We still have those 2 armies from our war with Japan, right? Might as well use them if we aren't already.

I ran the armies pretty far down on the initial invasion of Russia, it will be a few turns to get them to full health.

The trebs and crusaders should be ready to attack after 1-2 turns.

Thinking long term - what are we going to do about the arabs?

@Bede - What do U think about rushing to N.B. Forrest's raiders asap (ie true cav.)?

we have plenty of money.

And see what I can do about relieving the Egyptians of some of thier cash so they will have to fire Einstein

pleez post on how you pickpocket them

@ Viper - if you start a 'no research or all war' and think I'm qualified, please advise.

Sorry - forgot turnlog last night - no time for
further comment since I have to drag myself off to work :(
(with a hangover :( )

Viper275 - On deck
MSTK- on vacation 31 Jul - 19 Aug
Sir Clive -
mtgfreak - vacation 31 Jul - 13/14 Aug
Admiral Kutzov - Just played
Bede - Up

I am having a really good time watching you guys slug your way through all these AI. You guys are playing some really good turns, and I'm getting really, really sorry I didn't get into this quick enough to sign up. I love a good slugfest.

@Admiral: "Thinking long term - what are we going to do about the arabs?" umm... :hammer: (now just figure out how. :D )
