My thoughts on the Taj:

it's cheap with marble
It allows to tech quickly toward rifling (as there are still a lot of techs to acquire)
We can switch to FS the first turn (fastest teching)and to nationalism (draft rifles) the last without anarchy...

That being said we could go PP and then rifling directly...

Seems like we're all kind of fence sitters. Actually, if Darius' demise is what we most want, then nationalism is the go. I don't see any reason to delay the unis, though, as we've still got a fair bit of tech to go.
 
Report to 910 AD (16 turns):

T220: launch some workers, assign priest in Moscow (for Tao shrine). Switch a mine from Gondar to StPetersbourg.

T221: Whip the forge in St Pet. Settle Yeha (starts on a WB). Whip court at Lalibela (this city has built only troops after that, swords and LBs).

T222: We start some hindu missionaries.

T223:Gandhi built the Angkor Vat in Bombay... Darius got education this turn so we trade it to Gandhi:

T230: A scientist is born in Moscow. As Darius just got lib, I trade it to Gandhi:

T335: I whip the Taj in Aksum as it grow in unhappiness. I chopped the 4 left forests to get it asap.

T336: Our GA starts as PP finishes... I stop here.

I have selected Gunpowder on the path to rifling but guild might be better if we can't (or don't want to) trade it from Gandhi...
All cities have now hindu, most with courts. Also the unis are in production everywhere...

Sorry about the academy... I wanted (as you it seems) a prophet out of Moscow but then got the scientist... I thought bulbing PP would give us a head start on rifling... perhaps Darius has made academies for us :D

Looking good. I'd probably MM to get all those unis out of the way asap. I'm not sure about that stele build in Abbas Abbaba(??), which also looks like it was whipped. Why? Anyway, this could probably be used as a tao spammer.

I had a bit of a look at the UU Oromo, muskets with drill II, I've honestly never utilised them before. Has anyone else? What about taking them for a run against Darius while we tech to rifling? Build a stack of cats (or trebs if we get eng) and then when gunpowder comes in, do a round of builds, upgrades, or drafts, and see how they fare??
 
Moscow has Stonehenge in it, I assume it was the Granary that got whipped. Oromos work really well until they come up against Knights, which they have a lot of trouble against. With combat 2 they'll do ok against them though, and maybe if we can get Darius to send a stack towards one of our cities they could be useful for destroying it without too many losses. I expect that there will be some, he does still have over double our power rating. One of the best things about Oromos though is that they keep the drill promotions when upgraded, and drill 4 Rifles are very dangerous against Middle age units.

Anyway, got it, I'll play this evening or tomorrow afternoon sometime.

About the oromo... I think they are good if the opponents haven't knights which Darius has... I didn't totally get it ... do you advocate a war after gunpowder or rifling? I think the good way is to build maces with CR, Oromos with anti-gun promo or formation and some trebs, and then upgrade when rifling comes in... thoughts?

I wasn't really taking either position, just trying to get some thoughts on Oromos, which we can build/draft in 8 (iirc) turns. I'm just not sure we could get an effective army together until rifling anyway, but certainly a mix of upgraded CR mace and drill Oromo will do the job with siege.

Don't forget the civics changes in the GA. (sorry :), just in case - I always forget this sort of thing)
 
Sorry for the delay, had a few unexpected things to do yesterday. I'll play in a couple of hours, but first I just want to make sure I've got the plan right:

- Finish teching Gunpowder, then try to trade for Guilds to research Rep. Parts.
- Finish the universities in order to get Oxford going
- Switch to Theocracy at some point if most of the universities get completed
- Switch to Nationalism once Gunpowder's finished and draft some Oromos

I'm unsure about the last point, the Bureaucracy bonus is a big boost in getting Rifling faster, so I'd have thought it might be better to leave drafting until we discover Rifling.
 
Switch to FS at the beginning of the GA.
And try to trade (if you want to) to guild before researching gunpowder as it's one of the prerequisites... that way we will get a discount on gunpowder.
Finally the switch in nationalism is to draft rifles (IMO) without loosing a turn in anarchy... I think you can build some oromos but drafting rifles is more efficient (same cost in pop)

Finally got it done:

Switched to Free Speech on the first turn, switched research to Guilds, couldn't get anything better than Nationalism for Guilds and some gold, which wasn't really worth giving up the monopoly for.

1 - 910 AD: Hindu Temple -> Aqueduct in Aksum (about to turn unhealthy)

4 - 940 AD: Darius now has PP, so I trade it with Gandhi for the rest of Guilds, Theology, a world map and 60 gold. I couldn't get Engineering and Guilds without trading Nationalism as well. Start researching Banking.

7 - 970 AD: Gandhi switches to Free Religion and we drop from Friendly to Pleased. Fortunately he'll still trade techs though.

IBT: Darius asks for Nationalism, I say no. Meet Bismarck, who has enough on his hands, looks like there's a war going on on the other continent. He still doesn't have Education either, but is willing to trade Optics, although I leave it for now.

8 - 980 AD: Scientist is born in Moscow, he'll bulb Optics, but that seems like a bit of a waste, an Academy in Aksum could be useful, or even the extra turns of GA. I send him to Aksum for now, he can bulb just as well anywhere. Banking's completed, start researching Rep. Parts in the hope that Gandhi might finish Gunpowder in time to trade for it.

Sorry for the short report, I'm a bit on short on time ATM. The universist in St. Petersburg will be finished in 8 turns, and after that we should be able to build Oxford. Replaceable parts should be finished in 9 turns. I'm unsure what to do with the GS, another GA would be a big immediate boost, but an Academy in Aksum would add about 20 bpt.

I agree, there aren't good trades at the moment... and I think (not sure) that Bismarck is not agood trader anyway...
We should redirect some workers to finish the cottaging of Gondar... this city could also use some happy buildings (whip!)...

I think I was up after colony, but am a bit hungover from a wedding I attended yesterday, so I'll go after Ralph.

Yep, the way forward is clear, although I though we'd do gunpowder first to build some oromo for upgrading with their free drill. Not to worry.
 
Well a quiet builders set, no spectacular gains no spectacular losses.

Started with staring at this for 5 minutes trying to puzzle out why this square has 3 food. I guess some RE from the past (swimming truffles anyone!)

A quick deal with Gandhi to keep cash flowing in and switched Lalibela to library -> University to free up Oxford in the Capital

After that we did some necessary infrastructure finishing Cottaging Gondar and clearing some Jungle whilst going down the Rep Parts -> Gunpowder path

Meanwhile AP comes in and we win.

  2. Novgorod and St Pete’s have health issues but are building an Aqueduct /Harbour to tackle them.
  3. We are spawning a few Tao Missionaries in case we get the Prophet we are looking for from Moscow and in preparation for FR later.

I am not sure we will have the time to build the globe before starting the war... but we should try indeed... We have to move fast as we won't have the rifle advantage for long seeing how Gandhi and Darius have already PP... but the draft is so awesome regarding production output...

Agreed with Ralph on building maces and trebs for now, but I would wait rifles to draft, especially if we haven't the globe.

I'd rather wait for Rifles before drafting too now I've had a chance to think about it. Definitely agree with trying to get the Globe Theatre in Moscow before we finish Rifling though, the theatres shouldn't take too long to build. Maces and Trebs will be useful, especially Maces that can be built with 2 promotions, a few CR2 ones upgraded to Rifles would be a massive boost.
 
Hi chaps. Sorry for the delay. I actually did play the same day of my got it post, but I couldn't get onto CFC at all! worse news is that I'm now 500kms further south of the save, and so wouldn't be able to post it until next tuesday. I suggest we disregard my turns, and someone else plays on from he previous save.

Without any spoilers, the plan was: build theatres and banks, then GT, build tao pagoda in Mocow if GP doesn't pop, otherwise build oromo/mace in HE city, and missionaries in that east coast city. In other cities, intersperse trebs with the buildings. Gift edu to (iirc) Pericles on the other continent to get on better terms. Tech hard for rifling, and by the time it comes in we should have a nice stack of oromo and mace to upgrade (science at 0) with treb support. Also get the workers to build roads to connect to our southern border to speed the attack. What happened to shifting civic during the GA, btw?

Sorry my turnset didn't work out, tho it was unavoidable. :(
