I read in Sullla's Single Player Walkthrough (Link on general discussion) that it's important to place cities on the coast, versus one off the coast. Can someone fill me in on why this is so important?

Er... is it because non-coastals can't produce boats? <--- just started thinking again... lol

Well of course boats. But 2 other big items.
1. More Trade Routes - Money
2. City improvements available that are not otherwise available. Lighthouse and harbor are very nice. Coastal city wonders.

I think what he was refering to is that if you place a city one tile from the coast you will have sea squares that you can't improve upon by building lighthouse/harbor and such. They'll be very low yielding squares throughout the game.

Always, always place cities on the coast if you can. The greatest reason is for trade routes. Cities on the coast automatically connect with eachother without roads. In addition, there's certain very valuble improvements only available to coastal cities; e.g Harbour, which increases trade route income by +50%. Having cities by the sea also gives you more choices for coastal wonders like the Great Lighthouse (+2 traderoutes in all coastal cities). What else... four resources can only be found off the coast (clams, crabs, fish, whales) and if you've got a good bit of culture over water, you increase your chance of getting an offshore oil well inside your borders. Finally, you have more production points for your navy.

<3 coast.
