My friends, since we do not anticipate a War against our Southern Neighbors, and yet the Other Continent is devouring the weak, our Histographic Lead is being challenged.

Also, since we are not going to war, we have a Settler in Odawara that has no orders.

I hereby propose a plan to give us a foothold in the other Continent from which to conduct "Operations".

This foothold is upon the ruins of the former Indian City of Dacca.

It is ringed with Mountains, save for a small inlet for ships. An ample number of Samurai, or even Swordsmen, should protect against any threat by land.

If we can upgrade our Galleys to Caravels, and gain Navigation, we can settle thither. And from thence, we can send Samurai to disrupt the traffic of goods amongst the Chinese and the Russians (by pillaging roads in "neutral" territory). This city would also serve as a base for more overt action against the other Continent.

So, what say ye?

Smart thinking !!!

Probably we'll never get there in time. But I do think having a landbase there could be useful. I support the part of the plan where it says: send a settler + some Samurai to the <yet to be named> other continent. If they fighting continues there we'll be very unlucky if we can't grab a foothold.

It should only serve as a base for peacekeeping operations; AKA separating fighting forces. If it's going to be used offensively I am against it.

how did that railroad get there?

It was a feature/bug that when I city disbands, a road + railroad is 'built' there, even if railroads haven't been discovered.

If we can get to that city in time, I'm all for it. Perhaps we will get coal/uranium in the vincinity, but in any case, it's nice to have a city on both continents.

Good place, very defensible. We'll have to ship some workers over though, and that city will probably never grow.

nice idea :goodjob:

Now that's what I'm talking about! :goodjob:

Rather than the fight/expand/rinse/repeat method of DemoGames past, let's use Sir Donald's example to morph into a new kind of thinking. This is the kind of true-to-life proposal that a civilized government would propose, rather than soullessly whining about how we can't impose our UU on less fortunate civs of the world. More realistic roleplay; less Civ3-specific lingo --- makes for a better DemoGame experience.

I haven't evaluated the Chinese threat, but this thread has piqued my interest to the point that I will likely do so. Hat's off to Sir Donald!

I was think along those lines. That is why we should get Magnetism ASAP and that will make colonization much easier. We might be a bit late, but their is more than that to colonize on the other continent.

Much of the credit should go to Epimethius for drawing my eyes in this general direction.

I think we should use this upcomming Turnchat as a preparation for these sort of operations, and the following one as execution of plans. But I think that I will put up a poll for sentiment in general.

I think it was part of the colony bug. Any city/colony that was autorazed would get a rail. It was a tricky exploit too, as you could build a railnet (very hard, though) in the ancient era. It can't happen in PTW and C3C because the roads are deleted when the city is razed/abandoned.

Why would you bother to do that? You would be wasteing 2 citizens every time you do that. I think it is not worth it.

Since I have mentioned my goals in my first post (use this city as a base for Harassment of China and Russia against their Indo-German gains), and though I am Domestic and not Military, I think I can give a "Schedule" for an "Western" Expeditionary Force:

4 Caravels:
Caravel 1: Settler, Samurai, Musketman.
Caravel 2: Roman Worker, RW, RW.
Caravel 3: 3 Samurai (Or 1 Sam, 2 Expolorers)
Caravel 4: 3 Samurai or 3 Swordsmen.

We would actually mix these guys around between the vessels, but you get the idea. I grouped them thus for their respective missions:

Caravel 1: Settler and Garrison. If we were to want more than 1 city, repeat Caravel 1 as many times as requested.
Caravel 2: 3 guesses. Roman Slaves are slower but we won't be risking our own workers this way. For every 2 cities past the first, repeat Caravel 2.
Caravel 3: This one is, "officially" for "defensive" purposes. In reality, I would have these guys pillaging roads in Neutral territory, to disconnect the Chinese and Russian gains from their capitals, hindering their growth. Would be replaced by Explorers when we get Navigation. (Or could use 1 Sam and 2 Exp if we get Navi eariler.)
Caravel 4: This one holds the "official" expediiton army. Its purpose would be shifted between defensive fortification and colonial war as circumstances dictate. If we're trying to active save or avenge Germany, repeat #4 as needed, and add this caravel:

Optiona Caravel 5: 3 Musketmen. This one is for (Temporary) garrison of Liberated German Cities, if we get there in time. (Note the lack of quotes. Let us be like Daft.)

We already have the Samurai and the Settler required for this, but as of yet we dont have explorers, and only two galleys so far.

Upgrade the galleys and begin a massive naval project?
