In my last game I was spanking Asoka pretty hard and got him to
capitulate. I saved the game right before making him capitulate. I
checked the land\population % on the victory page before and after
the capitulation. After he capitulated, my land\pop % jumped 3-4%
which would make sense since im now his master. So then I tried to
make a colony on Asoka's continent which spawned a new civ and made
my land\pop % drop back down 3-4%. So im really confused now, is a vassel aquired from war any different then a vassel aquired from a colony? Shouldnt his land\pop still count toward my total land\pop %?
If not, whats the point of a colony? I know i can save a lot of maintenance costs by making one but what does it give me in return?
I have never won a domination or conquest victory before so maybe im doing
this whole vassel thing wrong.

Also, is it a bug that you lose any privateers in the city once you liberate
the city to a new colony or civ? seems like they should at least get pushed
out of the city like the way culture pushes a unit away that doesnt have open borders. I lost an entire fleet of privateers that way.

Only half of your vassel's land and population count towards your domination victory total.

Don't know about the privatteers though.

i haven't seen that happen, but there are bugs with privateers being in your cities. if you have any in your cities, and someone you have OB with comes sailing in for a visit, your privateers go poof! no chance to fight back at all i think, big bug but never happened to me since i read about it so i don't hide mine in cities *giggle*.

some of the privateer issues are listed to be fixed in the ComingRealSoonNow patch:

Privateers no longer destroyed when a friendly ship enters its port.

Rival Privateers count as enemy units for "show enemy moves" and "show friendly moves" options

and not a game-breaking issue but i'm really glad to know they're fixing it:
Deafening Privateer plunder sounds no longer occur simultaneously at the beginning of your turn

but i don't see what you mentioned explicitly on there. it's probably related to the poofing when a friendly ship comes into port, so that fix might fix it automatically? but maybe not, since they're not supposed to be in anybody else's cities at all. even your vassals. he'll attack 'em even since he doesn't know they belong to his master. actually, maybe because he thinks they belong to his master...
