I have always thought it might work to somehow combine ranged with melee units. Now with Civ6 and the new combination or hybrid unit feature I wonder if this idea might be implemented.
The ranged embedded in a melee could work like the Civ V Impi that performs a small ranged attack prior to a melee attack, while the melee embedded in a ranged units could enhance its defense against melee attacks.
I really dont think this will be possible. From what has been said, there are two types of "units".
Classic units that can be merged among the same type to form corps or armies (3 riflemen, 3 gatlings) and the support units that arent actual units and add specific bonuses to an existing unit.
So for example. 3 riflemen with anti aircraft support bonus can merge in a super riflemen AA army. But you wont merge two riflemen and a gatling gun together.
To define it more general, there are 4 categories of military land units: melee foot soldier, melee mounted, ranged soldier and ranged siege. Maybe some more types, but these are there most probably. I would expect that neither of these 4 categories would merge with each other.
