When a city is built amongst several squares of a commodity (example silk) you have to build a road to get the commodity into your city. But if
1) you have more than one square within your city area--Is there a benefit to building roads to all the commodity squares even if their the same commodity?
2) if theres another square of the commodity outside that city is it beneficial to build a colony to get more?

In a nutshell YES!

It will give you extra to trade and you will prevent to AI from getting access to it. Be careful of colonies though, the AI loves to build cities next to them and thus destroying your colony. At least they like to in my game.

There is always a benefit to trade--I'm not certain if your civs use more than one or two of any luxury, but trading the excess to other civs can get you some nice bonus money.

I started my first game last night and was lucky enough to get started very near the chokepoint of my continent. I figured out how to choke off the AI from coming into my side of the continent, now all I have to deal with is their landing partys! ;-)

So far the main advance in the game design appears to be in the intelligences of the AI.

Good luck, be patient and listen to other people at this forum like Ironfang. If you played civ2 things are very different and be prepared to change your gameplay. Other than that good luck and welcome to the forum.
