So the questioning of anthropocentrism, nature exploitation, hedonism, neocolonialism, war, and blah-blah-blah, etc, as fruits of civilization, is turned into Russophobia?

Oh, I am not surprised, it is Civfanatics in all its glory!

Why do you even raise a subject if you do not want to address its issues?

Playing a good game with your friends is really one of the joys of life. I think on some level we're all just trying to find the perfect game to play with the perfect people in the perfect house, so that we could play it into eternity, happily.

The low point of my gaming addiction was when I realized it was interfering with my addictions to hookers and cocaine. Once I realized this, I took serious steps to put gaming in its more properly reduced role in my life.

and blah-blah-blah, etc

It is exactly how I read Your posts Olek-Alexander "blah-blah-blah communism blah-blah-blah communsism blah-blah-blah Proletaryat blah-blah-blah communism" change the tape man ;)

A man my age should not be playing them.
This part is completely stupid. As if there was an age limit on playing or escapism.

But it has caused my married life to be on the point of failure.
This part, though, is really serious.

I'm a VERY heavy player (basically spend the majority of my free time on computer games, and I would not accept any attempt by anyone to remove them from my life), but I'm not sure I'm really "addicted" in the clinical sense (I can easily and instantly stop playing if anything else happens, like a party or friends coming home or a visit to/from family or the like).

To answer more precisely about what happens to you, is this a problem about video game encroaching on your life (like you HAVE things to do, or people to see, or places to go, but you forgo them because you can't let go or your game), or is it simply that you fill up your free time with them and your wife is tired seeing you constantly in front of your screen ?

The first case would be serious and dangerous addiction, the second case would rather be a situation where you need to negociate, trying to split your free time between your own (you have the RIGHT of having your own personnal space) and sharing activities with her.

I thought role playing games went great with hookers?

Sure, if your role play is to be the victim of role playing with someone too dumb or unmotivated to properly do so.

Yes. :)

Are there orthodox Russians on this forum?

Ok, first realization: A game is a game, it can be played anytime.

Second realization: Life is life, it can be played anytime.

Third realization: A game is a life, you enjoy it to the fullest, but with no real life.

Fourth realization: Life is a game.

Fifth realization: No restarts from number 4!

A culture of encouragement of self-indiscipline (call it hedonism, globalism, liberalism or just a society of adult spoiled children).

WTH does it got to do globalism and liberalism? Hell, if the protestant work ethic was the world's global value, it might be totally different.

Let's be honest. Playing 1 hour or 2 a day isn't realistic.

Yes it is, I've been playing Final Fantasy 13 pretty much exclusively for the past 6 months, according to game stats I've put 80 hours in, so that's less than 30 minutes per day on average.

Looking back on my life of playing games I've pretty much concluded that when we play games a lot it's more to our benefit. If you want to stop playing you gotta replace them with something. Otherwise what's the point? When you have something to do instead, you'll do it.

That's me, anyway.

Yup. I used to play games a lot. Now I have more pressing stuff in my life and I automatically play them less through no real effort on my part.

I actually make an effort to play games now, because they're fun, and a lot of the urgent stuff in my life isn't important, and isn't actually fun for me to deal with.

and travel time to work.

Yeah, cut this out, it's a huge waste.

Decide if your current home or your current job is more important, and then either move to eliminate travel time or get a new job (and move to that job if necessary) to eliminate travel time.

Try to find a game you both enjoy, and play it instead.

If any of you know Defense of the Ancients, I used to play for extremely long periods of time. Since I have introduced it to family, we play in a group on weekends. If this family gameplay is more enjoyable than playing by yourself, you have succeeded; you will begin to selectively spend your time enjoying the game with her rather than playing solo. This will reduce the amount played and will increase the interaction.
