When I turn on my computer, it will go as far as the Windows Vista loading screen, but instead of then going onto a login screen, the screen goes blank and my computer stops. When I run start up repair the computer works until I shut it down, then I get the same problem again.

I'm not sure if it's related but the last restore was created by Windows Update.

Could possibly be a video driver problem. If it works in safemode, try going to the device manager and disabling your video, then reboot and see what happens.

I couldn't get it to run in safe mode.

Before the blank screen, it sometimes makes a message appear. It disappears before I can write any of it down, but it begins with the number 143 and the part I managed to read before it disappeared said something like registry/machine/component/install.

When I ran the start up repair I looked at the error log and it said something like "A patch is preventing the system from starting."

I think you misunderstood, what I meant is that on the Vista installation DVD, there's a repair thing there, that helps if you can't even get into your OS.

The links I provided, if you don't have a proper install DVD, you can download the recovery parts and create a recovery disc.

I had a similar problem, and as my laptop did not come with a Vista install disk, I had to reformat the hard drive. If you look in the instructions which came with the PC, it will probably tell you how to do so.

I tried the disc, and it is the same recovery programme that is on my computer.

The one on my computer allows to restore I think to factory settings, but I don't want to try it unless I have to, as I don't have anything to back up what I have on my hard drive.

Go here:

Its free and they do an excellent job. Or upgrade to windows 7.
I was planning to upgrade to 7 after Christmas.

Well, first, I'd try Startup Repair.
That's what I have been using.

When I turned the computer on today, it went through the same start up sequence, with the odd message appearing, but instead of going to blank, it went to the update screen and then onto the log in screen. I guess the problem was with Windows Update, and it might explain all the system restore points created by Windows Restore in the past couple of days.
