Computer Questions Not Worth Their Own Thread

Okay, so I just tried to burn an empty CD. Luckily the program informed me.

So... are there any programs that would give you a coaster if you didn't put any files on?

Question.
My sound seems to have dissapeared. Sound works when I click buttons on the front panel, but no sound is heard "from the inside" (music, windows sounds, anything). I'm on an HP laptop (yes, that one with a lot of problems ;) ), using Vista. All CP parameters say that they work fine. Where should I look for a solution?

1) Are the speakers plugged in?
2) Is is muted? (It's extremely easy to do that and not realize.)

Does the laptop have a separate volume control from windows? Make sure it's not muted or turned to low volume.

Can you determine if it's a windows problem? The easiest way is with a live CD. There may also be a sound test in BIOS.

Built in and working whenever I hit a button on the panel just up the keyboard.

Thats the funy part. It is not. However the "mute button" that used to turn red when "on" doesn't do that any more.

You mean under volume settings on a windows bar? Checked that first thing. Separate volume control is located at the panel as shown here. When I click any of the buttons there - they do emit a sound. The "mute" button is broken on that panel. It works, but does not change color as before.

Bingo! I'll try BIOS.

Still the "working" panel is puzzling me.

Start -> Right Click on My Computer -> Manage. Go to Device Manager on the left side. Find the Sound, Video and Game Controllers tree. Expand that tree and post a screen shot please.

I would have done that, but decided to go with a simpler system re-install. Its fixed, restoring my data now. Thank you guys :)

Question: Suppose you're flashing your BIOS, and so you have a UPS. Then your dumb neighbor outside crashes into the telephone pole and the power goes out and the UPS blows and your BIOS gets corrupted and unusable. Who's to blame?

Who's to blame for what?

The insurance companies would figure out the blame for the driver.

Any decent UPS covers plugged in equipment for a few hundred thousand dollars.

Try another browser?

Might have to open it from Explorer and use the default application to print it out. Slower, I know, but after all it is a RC.

Might want to send that to their bug report forum too.

Why is it that whenever I do a Windows Update, 15 minutes after reboot it comes back up saying it has *more* updates? That happened just today....

No, itll prompt you to reboot. Personally, Id just have it remind you that updates are available. Windows update and the SMP Folding at Home client dont play well on my machine, so I wouldnt have updates on automatic. Might start up at a bad time for me.

Come again?
Also, what version of Word are you using?

I'm using Word 2007.

I have a table that won't fit into a page. It can fit if I change the orientation of the page to landscape, but I can't do that since it would screw up the page numbering. So I'd like to change the orientation of the table only, like rotating a picture 90degrees.
