Computer Spec. Required

People who played Civ 5 fine may need to upgrade or buy a new pc. The specs here are higher than I expected. We'll see what the official announcement states, but I don't think these specs are far off the mark.

Do you know the source of this? Is it just something a random user might have added or is it from an official source?

Those specs are close to what I predicted. Looks like i7 not required and the gfx card requirement is what may push an upgrade. Most can find a 760 and 960 gtx cards for sub 100 and both those cards would overshoot the minimum required. The new pascal 1060 cards would also be budget priced.

The cpu should be more of an issue than gpu, it's not usually that gpu intensive. Guess I'll have to oc my i5-760! An i5 2500 is pretty sizable upgrade over that but maybe not if I can tweak it to ~3.3ghz

That doesn't necessarily cause me issues but I know, from playing Gedemon's and Cookie's mods with the many extra Civs, the later era are murder. Can anyone give me an idea if I should focus on upgrade of CPU (so expensive because of all the other parts) or just GPU?

MSI Z87-G45
i7-4770K 3.5Ghz. OC to 4.0Ghz (Haswell)
32GB RAM DDR3 PC3-10700 667Mhz, OC to 933MHz
NVIDIA GTX 760, 2GB GDDR5

Thank you all for your help.
Using the link provided by nokvirt it looks as if I will likely be safe with;

Core i5 3.3 Ghz
GTX 750Ti
8Gb RAM
Win 10 64bit.

I need to get a new desktop for other reasons, and do not want to find Civ VI unplayable.

Yeah I would say so. Of course this means my Civ 5 pc is obsolete now. I'll have to use my new one. And as for the post above, I wish the new game would play on this pc. However, I think the specs are fairly close to what they will be. Even though they are not official at this point. They may not even be official until September. Civ V SR did not come out until August 2010.

My speculations:

  • Probably will require 64-bit so they can finally let go of the RAM limits. Might offer both 32 and 64 to maximize the audience.
  • DX11/DX12/Vulkan graphics APIs (Civ5 was one of the Mantle supporters, so my guess is they will support Vulkan). Probably will drop 9 since it's a new engine.
  • Windows 7+, plus Mac OSX and Linux (OpenGL for OSX/Linux, maybe also Vulkan on Linux?). Too many people still on 7 to abandon it, especially for a game with such a wide audience.
  • 4 GB RAM.
  • Still supports dual-core CPUs, since so many laptops still have them.
  • Slightly higher/newer graphics requirements than 5.

Looks like if your Computer can run Civ III it can probably run Civ VI. 8)

Somehow I doubt my Pentium II with an 8 MB Matrox G200 graphics card from 1998 will be able to run Civ6. Even if I did put XP on it instead of 98 and turned the resolution down from 1920x1200.

But it does play Civ3!

I can just barely run Civ5 at max settings at 900p with 28 civs on huge maps. I get framerate drops in the late modern era and turn times take a couple of minutes, but it is playable. Hopefully I won't need to upgrade for this.

Still running my AMD Phenom II x4 965BE and my Radeon HD 6870 1GB. If anything I hope I only need to upgrade the GPU, I don't want to have to buy a new mobo and OEM (since the Win10 upgrade ends soon my 7 OEM will be worthless) to upgrade to Intel just yet.

Might depend on how well the AI support multiple cores. If it supports 4+ cores, it wouldn't surprise me if you actually saw better AI turn times than in Civ5.

Graphics-wise, I don't know how much it'll increase... it doesn't look that much more demanding yet. I also have a 1 GB Radeon HD 6870... I actually find it pretty good for Civ5 at 1200p, although I don't really care if it's maxed out.

If you do need a new CPU/GPU, it's definitely worth waiting a bit; AMD and nVIDIA are both coming out with major GPU upgrades this summer (Radeon 400-series, GeForce 1000-series), and AMD is coming out with a major CPU upgrade in the second half of the year (Zen).

I expect I'll probably be okay with the 6870 and my i5-2500K, although perhaps at lower settings than in 5.

There is no source, it is speculation.

Yeah, they just made that up... no better than any random CFC member's speculation really

So I pre - ordered, and realised I didn't check the system specs. Silly me :hammer2:, but there aren't any anyway. Not too worried as my rig is 18 months old, but it did occur to me that there is probably other silly people out there with more dated gear.

Isn't this kind of unusual for a game just 5 months away? bit of an over sight?

Apparently it will be Direct X 12 compatible, so Win 10 needed for that.

What do you think the min is / will be?:dunno:

It's not too silly - luckily Steam will cancel/give refunds on pre-orders. So you'll have plenty of time after specs come out. Assuming you pre-ordered on Steam, that is.

Thanks for the links.
Agreed, System specs should be available, at least what you will be safe with anyway.

Oh! Ok thanks, I didn't realize you could do that. Yes bought from Steam.

18 months isn't that old for a computer, I have a 9 year old comp that runs Civ V at max settings .

the one I use most of the time is much better especially for civ, an SSD makes turn times closer soooooooo much better, I'd invest in one if you don't already have one.

I'm sure Civ VI will be easy to run, judging by the civ games.

From this site civ 6 will support dx12 and Asynchronous Compute so GCN amd card will be better.

Nvidia will have better drivers by then. It should be fine. DX12 is only for Windows 10. So, a lot of people will be playing with DX11. Firaxis must have had this on their mind and I am sure they want lower end systems being able to play the new game. I just hope my older pc can do it. Although, I have a new pc. I am more used to my old rig. Not sure if I really want to spend money to upgrade it just for Civ VI.
