Concerns With Alpha Centauri

Okay, done the SMAX leaderheads too.

I suppose there should be sets of pcx's to go with them (for the foreign advisor screen etc) - has anyone done those? I could, of course, but it's way too boring work to duplicate needlessly.

Also working on a few other things, some terrain improvements and city overview people heads... whatever they're called.
Edit: scratch the city view heads, the pallete isn't compatible, and I'm useless at editing them.

If you tell me in what file(s) the SMAC ones reside, I can take a stab at them.

Il take care of the city graphics and all of the civilopedia and techchooser icons just to let ya know.

The original AC citizen heads are in the file newicons.pcx.
If you've got the Alien Crossfire expansion, also look in aliencit.pcx for the alien ones.

heres a first look at one of the cities. ver 0.0

rather than recycling much of the game, I can simply start pcxs from scratch, I can make those kind of files.

Il start the alien cities now.

EDIT: I used Yoda Power's sci-fi buildings set, forgot to mention. So i didnt design the graphics.

Some of the city graphics, if they're convertable would be nice - I rather like the two alien sets and the Nautilus Pirates from the expansion.

Oh, almost forgot. I've just finished converting the large map of planet from the expansion. You can find it here

Being that we are talking about civ3 here, we can only have a maximum of 5 city graphics. The alien's cities would be an edition (only 1 maximum) and "The Cult's" cities i can use too.

Again, someone will have to send them to me, I don't have alien crossfire. (at least not anymore)

Should be able to use the ones I stuck up earlier, they've got the city files for Alien Crossifire in too.

I had a thought which might or might not be helpful: much more terraforming can be done in SMAC than in C3, yet it might be possible to use the pollution effects sequence of terrain changes to represent terraforming (i.e., instead of pollution ruining terrain as in C3, it actually helps by creating better - more Earthlike - tiles).

Best,

Oz

I see what you mean now.

that would'nt be a bad idea, however, it intersects with the origional icky, spreading kind of pollution. So, if you make improvements that encourages the pollution you're talking about, we would have to deal with the terrain-have to clean that crap stuff too. So thats attracting the good and bad at the same time.

Global Warming is another thing too, making good terrain would lead to rising waters as well.

Overall, it will not work.

Think about it though, I often end up causing global warming in AC, and usually drowning most of my enemies, but that's part of the way I play.
If we added my sea cities mod into this, it's possible - though I have yet to test this - the sea level may rise and the city would still be there, like a 1-tile island. That's my theory, at least.
If it turns out to be true, then that should solve that problem, no?

Oh, and if anyone feels up to it - could someone attempt a terrain conversion? I've got the files if you need them, Alpha Centauri and Alien Crossfire stuff.

Guys this looks very good already, just here to give you all my support!

Ive got the terrain in my responsibility.

We are not going to add the sea cities, because, again, the AI doesnt know how to use them. And when the water does rises, all of the "sea cities" will be destroyed, believe me i know that.

And we are not going to use the self-improving terrain, Il just use xeofungus as a terrain itself (replacing forest) and as a positive bonus, and later, they can plant the xeofungus.

I was thinking replace marsh with fungus, since AC has forests and jungles already.

But you can't plant Marsh.
So maybe, change Marsh graphics to Jungle, Jungle Graphics to Forest, and Forest Graphics to Xenofungus. A very round-about way of doing things but I think it's the only way if you want to be able to plant the fungus.

The catch is, forest in SMAC was plantable too - in fact, there wasn't any until planted by the humans. You'd ideally want both fungus and forest plantable, but there's no way to have both within the Civ3 engine. :( Since plenty of fungus will be around from the start, I'd be inclined to say the forests have the better claim to plantability.

(The jungles, OTOH, were aboriginal.)

Then il go with Quinzy on this one about the terrain, though of course we would have to sacrifice planting forests (basically we are not, but, you get the idea), still.

Anyways, Il start working on the terrain and tech icons Monday. The city graphics are all done but the alien ones.
