In my last turns of my last game, I realized I had trades for fur and whales going on, so I figured I would cancel them, having long since researched plastics and thingy, or whatever it is that obsoletes those. Much to my surprise, I saw my happiness decline. So I traded back for whales, and lo and behold, I saw in my city window a little tailfin with +1 happiness.
What gives? Am I missing something?

It's only your own whaling boats and fur camps that goes obsolete when you discover combusion and plastics. By obsolete I mean they wont provide the resource anymore, so your cities wont benefit from the extra happiness. If your trading partner doesn't have those techs yet, he will still get the resources, so you can trade for them and gain the happiness benefits again.

Kinda weird if you ask me.

Jedic, I don't think it works that way. AFAIK once you discover the tech that obsoletes it, you cannot gain the happiness bonus through trade either.

Uh, really? Weird. I could have sword I saw camps still on my fur. But I guess they were just decoration. Camps still work for deer, though, I suppose. But that explains how I got happiness from those barbarians without composites. That just doesnt make sense at all.

Oops I replied to jedic while oranges posted.
But then oranges, how did I get that happiness from whaling then?

i havent patched to 3.17 so i dont know if it still works this way but:

If you have resources that go obsolete you CAN obtain them through trade again to get the bonus again.
Untill that civ gets the right techs to obsolete them as well, then the trade is cancelled.

When you get techs that render resources obsolete, those resources vanish from your list and you lose their health and/or happiness bonuses. But you don't lose the extra food or production from the tiles, and you can restore the health/happiness if you can trade for those resources from another civ which has access to them and hasn't yet made them obsolete. A bit silly, but that's how it works.
