Conquer n raze

hi everyone
i'm new to this game. been playing for a week now.
yesterday i installed the Civ III patch (v1.29f) n ever since then i cant conquer a city,my units automaticlay razed it.

what am i doing wrong?

Nothing. Towns that are size one, have never changed hands, and that have no cultural improvements, always autoraze. The only way to prevent it, as far as I know, is to wait until the population expands.

Yes that feature came in around 1.17f, I forget the exact patch. It is in all versions now.
