Hi.

Can anyone recommend free software for converting Microsoft Word files to PDF? I will be producing a bi-weekly newsletter and would prefer not to buy Adobe Acrobat.

I really don't know anything about PDF files, so any advice and/or information is appreciated.

Why not use Open Office? It's a free, open source replacement for Microsoft office. It has built in PDF support, and you'll never have to pay for it.

i use doPDF. it installs as printer. there's lots of PDF makers install as printers.

Thanks for all of the responses! I would have responded earlier but I've been quite busy.

I used PDFCreator. I used it because when I interned at a large corporation, I used an application through Sourceforge, so I figured if that is good enough for them, it is good enough for me.

The application seems to work fine so far.

I use pdf995. It installs as a printer driver. If you use it as shareware it'll pop up a nag page in your browser whenever you use it. I spent the $9.95 to get rid of that because I use it so much.

Then I bought this thing, and got Open Office. Open Office is better, but I guess some folks really like Word.

I do like word (2003), but that isn't the point.
Open office writer has rally crappy interface, and just sucks to use.

And this save as pdf in open office, well, maybe I'm stupid but:
  1. I didn't find a way to protect pdf file with password
  2. some characters that aren't in english alphabet turn out to be bold, or replaced with something weard in pdf
  3. all pictures are (heavily) compressed without asking, so if you put a picture in your document and print it with open office, you get something very blured

I felt that way 'til I got used to it. Some of it makes more sense to me. Admittedly I always use pdf995 for my pdfs, just because it's handy.

I don't really use big fancy word processors. Just don't need 'em, plus they take forever to open (and I have a fast computer.) WordPad serves for 90% of my needs.

I don't use word processors 99% of the time. I use text editors (i.e. Notepad) as most of what I do is HTML and programming and word processors are overkill for that.

That and the fact that word processors arent good for programming in the first place. For that, you should get an IDE..
