Copa América 2011

I love this comment by one the Guardian readers:
Brazil and Argentina matching each other step for step.Just what the organizers had hoped for.

Argentina pull themselves together, get the show going, etc. etc. and score thrice within seventeen minutes to clinch the second spot and not depend on other teams' results. Mind you, it was against an under-23 team that even featured amateur players. At least the populace will be content…

To be fair though, Higuain alone missed some 4 open goals.

Bad result for the team. Of course being a U-23 team I wasn't expecting much, but I feel the team played well until the first goal. The coach made some offensive changes to start the second half, but you can't leave so many empty spaces against a superior rival. We are now relying on a victory from Venezuela over Paraguay (highly unlikely) to qualify to the next round.

Hey, you're still in as best third-placed team together with Peru.

So… Chile beat the Peruvian team with an own goal in added time, and Uruguay waste a dozen chances (Forlááááááán!) as they beat Mexico by the same margin.

So, for the QF we get now Argentina-Uruguay!

Paraguay has serious issues with late goals as they were leading 3-1 and had it tied in stoppage time after Venezuela cut the deficit in the 89th minute. Again :faint:

Brazil beat Ecuador 4-2 in a changing match, Robinho scores in the 91st minute but is wrongly ruled to be offside. Brazil wins anyway and end up leading their group and playing a bit of football along the way.

Strange about Paraguay, really, but you can't go around tying all matches.

In a bit, the upcoming knockout stages! But in another post otherwise it's too cluttered.

I really dislike the lack of coverage in NL.

I guess the Iron laws of football apply. First rounds look interesting, and often really bad, but in the end, the top teams get on with it.

Argentina - Uruguay should be good!

At least here I can watch the games in Spanish... Gooooooal!

I watched much of the two games last night while raiding with my WoW guild. There is some amazing soccer talent in South America. I typically dislike outward displays of nationalism, but I must admit that the games involving countries seem to be much more interesting than the professional ones.

Of course there is amazing talent in South America. Why else would First Division clubs in europe buy players even from the South American second Divisions?

Games in Portuguese often have a commentator saying Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool! for about a minute. :p

We have that too over here... It adds excitement to the games. Games in other languages are so boring, they just say "oh they scored" and that's it

We don't get much coverage of European First Division clubs here outside of some of the bigger teams.

I'm just surprised at the depth from the other countries in the tournament that don't usually appear in the spotlight, like Argentina and Brazil do. We don't usually get coverage here of South/Central American soccer either outside of the Spanish-speaking channels, so the only time I really get to see them play is when the US plays one of them, or when they advance far enough in WC play to make it out of their group.

The Spanish-speaking channels in the US should really consider adding SAP to their broadcasts for the English-speaking audience. Soccer is getting far more popular here lately, and I bet it would really increase their audience for these bigger games.

So I was pleasantly surprised to see Paraguay stay with Brazil for the first part of the match a few days ago, and now Uruguay is staying with Argentina in the quarterfinals, despite getting booked a heck of a lot. And now they are a man down with over half the game to play...

It is one of the few Spanish words I know. :p

Upset day indeed.

First shift, Peru stun Colombia who waste a penalty in the second half of regular time and then concede two spectacular goals, one in each half of extra time.

Second shift, Argentina fμck up royally with my birthday by losing to Uruguay. Who had one less player since the thirty-eighth minute onwards. On penalties. Still Argentina's best match by far in the whole tournament. They might ahve won, might have won, and the Uruguayans should start making a statue in honour of their goalkeeper. Fecked up me party though. More commentary tomorrow, don't feel like forumin' right now.

I sort of saw this coming. Milito and Burdisso are slow and couldn't keep up with Suárez, who knows very well how to give rival defenses trouble (and yellow cards). While Messi played well in the first half, he still lacked a partner in the offense. He must really miss Xavi and Iniesta a lot when he's playing with Argentina. Uruguay is a great team, with lots of courage; Playing most of the game with one man down is no easy task, specially against a star ensemble like Argentina.
One must wonder what is really wrong with this team, so many stars, but terrible team play. Or is it just bad luck?

EDIT: Muslera what a keeper, excellent game for him.

Didn't the US team qualify or is it Latin teams only?
