Corporations!

Maybe you need two monopolies from a category to make a corporation, but a monopoly gets something at guilds or so.. you can have a monopoly in the ancient era. Like the world famous champagne wine, or Damascus steel, or Ming vases. Maybe not the best examples but you see what I am talking about? Maybe a unique luxury from luxury companies, Unique unit from strategic company, buildings from a bonus company Company from a monopoly, corporation from incorporating companies.

That's almost like saying 'everyone should get a monopoly'. It shouldn't be that way. The Corporations tech should also give something to those who researched it without monopolies.

I'm not saying every should get a monopoly, I'm saying everyone can get a monopoly, that's how the maps are built up, luxuries on the same type are stacked together in the same area, so you should be able to pick up a monopoly with your first 3 or 4 cities.
And yes, the Corporations tech is probably going to do something other than enabling corporations, but I don't see how that is relevant to the current discussion. It is probably going to boost some tile-improvement or specialist or add a trade-route, I mean most techs are overfilled with features, moving a few to this new tech wouldn't be hard.

That would make corporations so rare that you would probably never see them. Getting two or three monopolies is hard work and getting them both of the same type would be close to impossible. Unless you're Indonesia, who would get it for free, naturally :D

Yeah you're right. It would make it very hard, but if they were very powerful (they seem to be currently) they could be as potent a game-play element as the religion. Achieving dominance is very difficult but can be instrumental in victory. If you needed two then you would have to actively pursue your corporation. I have achieved more than one monopoly during the course of a game more than once, and that was without pursuing them. I think the real problem would be getting the AI to pursue 2 specific resources for dominance among a list of ~6 from a choice of ~6 lists. Players would have corporations for sure. But i don't have faith in the AI doing something as complicated as I was imagining.

Are you dedicated to the lists? I think there is room for overlap. A sea corporation for all the sea resources. The already mentioned military corporation for strategics. Exotic foods a food and a spice.

Indonesia isn't the strongest Civ
Lolwhat? Extra 9 happiness (means 9% boost to yields) almost from the start, along with plantations giving 2f2g, and no unhappiness from isolation means Indonesia can quickly spam 4-5 cities without going into negative happiness.
Some UU promotions, like the one +30% defense +20 heal, are very strong and can carry until the endgame. Even if you don't have enough iron nearby, AI gladly will trade it for unique luxuries.

Corporations are coming along nicely. I'll have them included in the next release, though I'll make it 'modular' so that those of you who want to help me test/debug it can, and those of you who don't can simply delete the Corporations folder. Easy enough?

You're the best.

Any chance you can have a look at the communitas map script and do something about the crazy, entangled super-continents on Large or bigger maps? It looks like the Pacific Ocean rifts aren't generating properly on those map sizes a lot of the time.

I'll fiddle with some knobs. If you want, you can go into the communitas.lua file yourself and fiddle with the numbers as well - the script is pretty well annotated.

Speaking of map scripts, I sure would love an alternative to Oval, which I at the moment find the only playable map script because of how much open space all other maps end up with. I mean I guess I could start a small communitas map with double the players, but that usually ends up looking really weird. Is there any other decent map script that one can run?

Also why are you tricking me into going completely off-topic? :D

I've tried fiddling with the settings myself. I got the map to produce some beautiful forests (which I prefer over the dull Africa tileset forests) but I can't seem to solve the ocean rift issue. The new world and old world continents end up tangled into each other in about half the games on Large and above, really hideous stuff.

And yes I've tried reinstalling the standard Communitas map from the latest CPP and clearing the cache.

Also, is it safe to use the "Restart Game" option in the menu to re-make the map on Turn 0? I never touch it in case it messes up the DLL, but it would sure make re-generating the map less time-consuming.

I don't use it, but I believe it only reruns the mapscript.
The value to tweak in the communitas script has to do with ocean rift variance (I think it may be called ocean rift deviation?). It is at 5 right now, which is too high.

Base Boons: +20% Building Construction speed in this City. Trade Routes to cities with a Firaxite Materials produce 100% more science.

Having Influential on an opponent gives about ~25 Science per ROUTE around the era Corps will come in. :)

How did you do it? In any case, we should move this discussion out of corporations.
