COTM 14 Pre-game Discussion

I probably won't be able to start until Sat PM. I got an intense turnset in SGOTM7 in front of this one.

Just a question, is anyone out there considering researching anything besides Writing first and why?

Yep Denyd as a matter of fact I am :D I’m going to research Ceremonial Burial and maybe Masonry first before going for the Writing – Code of Laws – Philosophy – Republic route. As I need the temple and palace prebuild for my 20K city. I accept that there’s a chance I’ll miss out on the free tech from Philosophy, but I’ve managed to get it in the test game I played (and with quite a bit to spare too, most of my opponents hadn’t even researched Writing and some didn’t have the alphabet). Of course this might well change depending on if any trade options reveal themselves or not.

My somewhat wacky start sequence will be as follows:
Settle in place, build warrior, worker, granary, settler..
Move worker east irrigate and road the cow and then move southwest to chop the forest, while on the same turn the second worker moves south to chop the other forest. Then both workers move to the same forest tile and chop it together and repeat for the last forest.

Obviously this is a lot slower than just building a warrior and a settler, but I think this way works better for the long term as it gets a two turn worker factory to populate my 20K city.

I has been interesting reading all the different plans people have made, and I look forward to finding out how things turn out. I hope we all have fun with this one, and take care :)

I am also interested in Masonry or Burial, although I'm not sure have the confidence on emperor to risk delaying Philosophy.
My theory went like this...
1. We will need the Lighthouse to meet anyone (except maybe there will be one neighbour on our island).
2. The Lighthouse will trigger our GA, so we must be in Republic by then.
3. Republic is expensive, so we must get it from the slingshot, and then research Mapping with our new commerce-rich government.
4. We will be late to Mapping, so need to prebuild the Lighthouse.
5. None of our pre-Mapping techs allow decent prebuilds.
6. We need Masonry or Burial. I agree with Sawdust that Burial is more immediately useful.

Actually, there is another possibility, going back to the we-have-a-neighbour theory. If there is a neighbour, they should be militaristic and european. Sounds like Germany? They start with Bronzework, which allows Colossus. Mind you, it could be the Vikings. I certainly am expecting to see them somewhere on this arch map.

The curragh can't transport units.
Harsh, but there it is... In the Korean game, I saw a hut on a distant island and spent about a dozen turns bringing the curragh home to pick up a warrior to go pop the hut. :wallbash:

We should have the Canoe instead. A hold for one unit would be perfectly reasonable then. :)

Ummm, don't know if this is the place to ask this question, but can anyone tell me how to get these CotM's to work??
Every time I have downloaded one of these .sav files, there is always a problem with the computer recognising it :(! i.e. I keep getting a Read Error coming up when it gets around 40% into loading. Has anyone else seen or heard of this happening and-if so-what is the solution? Please, I am at wits end here!!

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

Well, I definitely have Conquests 1.22-though I might download it again just to be on the safe side. Other than that, though, it doesn't sound like there is much I can do, which means I have to keep missing out on joining in all the fun :(!

@Aussie Lurker: The ten step plan is:

1. Ensure that you are running a clean unmodded installation of the Civ3 Conquests
2. Check its software version in the bottom left corner of the splash screen.
3. If it's not version 1.22 then obtain the patch here and update it.
4. Download the start file and put it into your Civ3 Saves folder.
5. For COTM launch Civ3 Conquests. For GOTM launch Play the World.
6. Select "Load Game" from the menu and choose the downloaded start file.
7 and 8 are optional. See below.
9. Play.
10. Submit.

The optional steps are:
7. Play 80 turns to 1000 BC, keeping a QSC timeline in a text file.
8. Submit your QSC save and timeline.

Boy is my face RED  . I just checked the Splash screen, and I have version 1.00  I just don't get it, I could have sworn that I downloaded the Patch not long after I got the game. I can't remember, but I might have had to briefly uninstall the game for some reason or other, and then failed to add the patch to the reinstalled version.
Anyway, guys, thanks for your advice, and hopefully I can start playing soon. I only regret that I have missed out on so many other great conquest games.

Yours,
Aussie_Lurker.

Well, looks like I have already gotten off to an inauspicious start to my very first Conquest of the Month  . Just hope I can get my act together soon!

Aussie_Lurker.

BTW, I take it you can't go back to a prior point in the game and play back through?

You also can't come back here to discuss the game AT ALL once you have started. Please use the official spoiler threads for that, and take note of the thread reading and posting conditions in each one.

I ran some tests with the map editor.

Given that we start by a river, it is almost certain that we are not alone on our island. I'm also betting on agressive neighbors and historical enemies of the English--Zulus and Germans. And what would an 80% archi map be without Vikings?

Think I'll give this one a go. I'm notoriously bad at not finishing games, but at least with the QSC I can submit something. (I usually get bored late MA to early IA and want to start over.)

I see a "Swimming Tips" thread, but most of the people who are playing COTM started without seeing that, so I'm resisting reading it before I get started.

I'm a play-by-the-seat-of-my-pants player. Sometimes I think I'll follow someone else's suggestion but I usually say "screw it" and just play. The downside is I usually don't have a focus and put off war until I get a "few more units" or until I build all my markets, uni's, banks, etc.. I guess I'm a builder pretending to be a warrior.

Here goes...

Quite right. The spoiler threads are just what they say they are. Until you reach the correct point in the game they'll disclose map information that you are supposed to find out for yourself. Do NOT read spoilers until you meet the requirements in the first post of the thread.

It is quite possible that this map is heavily modded - I wouldn't read too much into editor tests.
