If you are planning to submit an entry for COTM 97 - Netherlands, then you must abide by the following rules when accessing this thread:

Thread access restrictions
Don't read or post in this thread until you have made contact with all opposing tribes, have full world map and can research a Middle Ages technology.

Note: Full world map means you know where all the opposing tribes live, and the extent of their territory. It is not necessary to have uncovered every ocean tile.
If you have established communications with all opposing tribes and completed a circuit of their coastline in a boat, then that qualifies.

Posting restrictions:
Don't post any information or pictures showing the location of middle age strategic resources or comment on the abundance or lack thereof.

If you managed to finish the game within the scope of this spoiler, I would ask that you keep your powder dry and astound us all with your genius in the next (and final) spoiler which will be posted in around 10 days time.

Settled in place and built 2 canoes, a warrior and a settler. Canoes E & W, warrior north, Settler east to settle next to hill. Met the Romans first, followed by the Iroquois. West canoe makes circle around Iroquois and returns north. Sent south to hopefully find neighbors there but sinks. Build galley. East canoe shoots across high and meets Spain, quickly followed by Portugal and eventually the Ottomans.

What a map :crazyeye:

Looks like a perfect 20k position, but i go for another win and move the settler

More in later spoilers

Thanks mad-bax for bringing this interesting game! I decided to follow the VOC rules as described in the pregame discussion so war against seafaring civ with harbor, keeping (trade) deals and no slaves working on home continent. Only changed the victory goal to 20k instead of UN. The VOC didn't care about being liked by other countries, just cared about getting luxuries, resources and money to Amsterdam to let the Dutch artists perform their great works.

Settled in place, build curragh, settler, curragh, colossus. First curragh goes clockwise around our island, meets Roman and Iroquois, other curragh goes counter clockwise. Both die exploring the high seas after circling the Dutch, Roman and Iroquois islands. No further contacts for a while.
Research: Republic slingshot, 4 turns anarchy, Republic established 1700BC. Traded the other starting techs with the Romans and Iroquois. Both Roman and Iroquois feel superior to the Dutch, demand Writing and declare when denied, giving the Dutch citizens some welcome war happiness:crazyeye:.

Peace with Iroquois around 1000BC to trade for their techs (iron working and Horseback Riding), after that traded iron for spices with them throughout the game. Settled a town on the Roman island on the dyes and make peace with them not long after as i didn't have the units to defend it. They didn't bother me for the rest of the game. Enter the Middle Ages in 750BC, research the upper part of the tech tree to Free Artistry. From Free Artistry on all research was done in 4 turns. I went next for Astronomy and Navigation, reached at around 300AD. Caravels started exploring the world. Meet Portugese and Spain, none of them have harbors yet and are still in the AA. Claim an incense and gems on their islands. Meet the Ottomans, they are very backward and haven't met the Portugese and Spain yet. They have nothing interesting.

A caravel south meets China and the Byzantines, we buy contact with the Greek. All three are just in the MA, the Byzantine have harbors so we declare and ally China and Greece against them to keep them busy. Buy fur from the Chinese for Engineering. The caravel travels west and meets France. Buy contact with England and Germany so we know everyone now. Buy ivory from France for a tech. England and Germany are in MA too and the English have harbors so I declare, allying the France (who build SoZ) against them.

build order so far in Amsterdam:
palace 4000BC
colossus 1910BC
temple 1650BC
